SCCM 2012 R2 - ADR results exceeded limit

I have 12 update groups, one of them is failing with the 0x87D20415 error

To prevent hitting this limit I have made several groups based on requirement, severity and classification.

The group in question is >=1, Moderate and Security Updates so not much else I can do to make it smaller and bottom line, Microsoft is the one that ultimately controls their updates right; so how can this single ADR hit the limit?

And what is the best way to resolve it since I'm sure I'll run into it again.

Thank you!

You need to break up the updates you are putting into the update group using additional criteria like release date and product. Definitely create multiple groups -- one each for Workstations, Servers and Office. It's not good for WMI for you to target every update at every system.

I really though this would be enough since I have 1 package for 1 severity and class...

That screenshot is for update packages, not groups and thus has nothing to do with any limits as there are none for packages.

I have an ADR for each one of these except the top one.

Sorry, don't mean to be blunt or rude, but so what? If you exceeded the limit, you exceeded the limit. The number of updates within a classification is unbounded and rightly so.

Why break your groups up like this in the first place though? The common way to do this by OS and/or product so that you can limit targeting and not target updates unnecessarily at OSes that don't need though.

Also, make sure you exclude superseded updates.

I guess I saw limitations either direction I go, no matter how you choice to categorize your eventually going to hit a limit, I decided to categorizes by update category etc.

Right, which is why picking a better separation, one that aligns with your targeting methodology makes more sense. Windows 7 only has 686 updates total in it for all classifications and Windows 8.1 has 354.
