I have Virtual Machine Manager (on VM) and its Database resides on 2nd VM running SQL Server 2014 evaluation.
Can I have a 3rd VM running SCCM .... and its DB residing on 2nd VM running SQL Server *With separate DB or ** Separate SQL Instance ***

According to following :

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj851033.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

noteNote

Hi,

Separate instances is what you can configure.

Please take a look at the following article:

SQL Instances and System Center 2012 (#SYSCTR #SQL #SCOM #SCCM #SCSM)
http://www.systemcentercentral.com/sql-instances-and-system-center-2012-sysctr-sql-scom-sccm-scsm/

Hope this helps. Regards,

I'm assuming this is a lab. You would never do this in production.

This is lab for now, once testing is complete, planning is to make a production setup.

What you think the best practice for the production?

In production only share your SQL instance with other ConfigMgr-related databases (WSUS, MDT etc).

But having a separate instance wont make it isolated?

I have no issues installing a separate SQL setup (or on the same box as SCCM) but then licensing will cost more for SQL... correct me if I am wrong?

The SQL cost is included in the System Center licensing as long as you don't use the instance for any other product.

You mean if a customer has license for SCCM then SQL is included in that?

If that's the case then why to make things complicated, I can have a VM for SCCM and SQL install on the same box ... will it make sence in production environment?

.... This reveals that if I am running SCVMM on a separate VM then I have to think about the SQL DB (or VMM also covers the SQL DB) ?

Thanks in advance.

I ALWAYS install ConfigMgr and SQL on the same server (unless the customer refuses to let me). It makes perfect sense in production and there is no additional cost. For licensing matters you really should discuss this with your Microsoft License reseller. It's a complicated area.

Thanks Gerry,

I mean as you mention SCCM will cover SQL, I am asking if same applies for the SCVMM?

Yes, it does. It applies to ALL System Center products.
