SCCM 2012 - support for AIX

 HI,

Need to know whether AIX Client is supported in SCCM 2012 with SP1. If yes, what all the features supported.

According to my knowledge AIX version 5.3, 6.1 and 7.1 will be supported. I can see they are not in Technet article. I will check and be back.

Yes, AIX will be supported.  But there's going to be a short time lag -- perhaps an extra month or two -- before the AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris 11 versions are released.  We will get Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, and Solaris 9 and 10 out first, and then HP-UX, AIX, and Solaris 11 will come a bit later.  The documentation is reflecting that first set of releases, and we will update the docs when we have HP-UX, AIX, and Solaris 11 ready.

The feature set on all of the Linux/UNIX versions is essentially the following.  The focus is on managing servers (not desktops or engineering workstations):

  • Hardware inventory (for a set of core classes and properties), and viewing inventory with Resource Explorer.   This includes listing of installed packages (e.g. RPMs) like Windows Add/Remove Programs list.
  • Ability to create dynamic collections containing Windows, Linux, and/or UNIX computers, based hardware inventory queries
  • Classic software distribution (packages and programs) -- can distribute Linux/UNIX applications, software updates, or run arbitrary scripts
  • Reporting (existing reports just work, but now include Linux/UNIX computers where relevant)
  • Client connectivity via HTTP and HTTPS with self-signed certs and issued certs (just like for Windows)

What's not supported:

  • User-centric app install using new app model
  • Operating system deployment
  • Software Update Management -- use Software Distribution instead
  • Settings Management (f.k.a. Desired Configuration Management)
  • Internet-Based Client Management (you aren't carrying around your server to Starbucks!)
  • Remote Control
  • Software inventory (i.e., scanning the file system for files that match a pattern)

Cumulative Update 1 to the Configuration Manager clients for Linux and UNIX has been released.

This release delivers the following additional capabilities and features to the System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 release:

* Support for managing additional operating systems: AIX, HP-UX, Solaris 11, CentOS, Debian, Oracle Linux and Ubuntu.

* Open Management Infrastructure CIM server (OMI Version 1.0.6.5) that enables customers to create their own inventory providers.

* A simplified common client, the Universal Agent, that supports a broad set of Linux distributions.

* Miscellaneous bug fixes.

The release is posted on the Download Center http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36212
