SCCM 2012 & 2007 Boundaries Coexist

Hi All --

Looking for some confirmation on something I heard. Is it true that I can have the same IP / AD boundary defined in an SCCM 2007 site and a new SCCM 2012 site? Where the SCCM 2007 client will utilize the SCCM 2007 boundary information in schema and SCCM 2012 client will use the SCCM 2012 boundary information?

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi,

No it is not true, the information published in AD is the same so you must still avoid overlapping boundaries between SCCM 2007 and SCCM 2012.

In addition,

If you have the same boundaries in 2007 and 2012 and they are writing the AD info to the same domain, 2012 clients will ignore 2007 AD data but 2007 clients may get screwed with the 2012 data. (I havent tested the latter but installing 2012 clients are fine).

Hi,

I think I have to clarify and somewhat correct myself(Thanks Torsten for the feedback and assistance!) In SCCM 2012 you can use a Boundary group for two things:

  • Site Assignement - Used when a client tries to detect which site it belongs to
  • Content Location - Used for content location.

From what I understand, tested and read, the Content Location boundary is not considered Overlapping and during my tests it has worked great to have a Boundary Group Overlapping a SCCM 2007 site assignement.

From the Technet Doc. "To help avoid overlapping boundaries for site assignment, consider using of one set of boundary groups for site assignment, and a second set of boundary groups for content location." http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh427326.aspx

This would make it posisble to have a SCCM2007 boundary and a SCCM 2012 Boundary Group used for content location overlapping which makes migration and transition so much easier. The doucmentation doesn't say explicitly that this is supported though..

I hope that helps you.

Jrgen

Hi Joergen,

Thanks for the feedback! So if I'm understanding you correctly, I can create all my boundary groups and when pushing the update package for the client out, specify the site the clients should be configured to use. Once all clients have been upgraded, I can then migrate the boundaries from 2007 to 2012 and add to my boundary groups?

Thanks,

Ryan

I also did same thing.

CM12 schema extended -> then  CM12 boundary migrated -> Discovery enabled -> then Client push started

** (during this activity I stopped Discovery and Client auto push in CM07)

and all CM07 client got  upgraded by CM12 agent and site information. by this time I not removed existing CM07 and in this environment all things running smoothly together CM07 and

I'm now thinking that you can have both 2007 and 2012 boundaries at the same time.

During a recent migration, I "migrated" the boundaries from SCCM 2012 to SCCM 2007, however, the boundaries are still listed / functional inside the SCCM 2007 environment.

That's true (as long as it's not a boundary group for site assignment) and Jrgen also mentioned it before.

Hi,

See If I understand it right

"Site Assignement - Used when a client tries to detect which site it belongs to"

- boundary Group  contains  MP (primary sites)

"Content Location - Used for content location."

- boundary Group contains DP server/s

Now we are migrating from sccm 2007 to 2012. Boundaries in 2007 are overlaping with boundary groups in 2012.

In 2007 enable AD publication. In 2012 we assign clients to the site and mp during client installation.

So we have content downloading problems: on PCs with 5.00 client and assigned to 2012 mp and site I can start Advertised Programs(old version of software center) and see advertisement from 2007. Also on new clients we have problems with software updates deploying: message "downloading 0%"
