SCCM 2007 and NT4
Is there any kind of work around to mange NT4 Workstations through SCCM 2007? All the official docs say it is unsupported.

Hi,
Like you said it is not a supported platform. The SCCM client and the SMS 2003 Advanced client (which can connect to SCCM) can't be installed on this OS.

The SMS 2003 client is not supported on NT 4.0 boxes, but I had success installing it on NT 4.0 machines.

Can SCCM 2007 manage the SMS 2003 client or does SCCM have to use it's own client?

SMS 2003 clients can be managed (with limitations), too and ConfigMgr has an own client.

SMS2003 advanced clients can be assigned to a Configuration Manager 2007 site.

Am I right in thinking that SMS 2003 advanced clients don't install on NT?

I can't remember any details ...I think that I had success in installing the SMS 2003 client on a NT 4.0 machine, but that's a few months ago.

You're right. The advanced client is supported on Windows 2000 or later platforms. The SMS 2003 legacy client is supported for Windows 98 orNT4 platforms.

What legitimate excuse could there possibly be to still have NT 4.0 computers? You can't patch them so why have them?

No, we have no supported procedures to manage Windows NT 4.0 clients. After SMS 2003 SP1, we stopped supporting them in SMS 2003, and Configuration Manager does not install on them either.
SMS 2003 would install on Windows NT 4.0 (as Torsten states) however we block installations on unsupported operating systems in Configuraton Manager.
We no longer manage them at all, as they are completely unsupported operating systems by Microsoft.

As you were replying in 2008, just a note that in 2010 we still have 7 NT servers :)
