SCCM 2007 Service Pack 2
Hi All,As we are beginning to look at using Windows 7 in our company, I now need to start to look at upgrading our current environment, SCCM 2007 SP1 to SP2.From what I have read I was under the impression that it this upgrade affects the SCCM servers (primary and secondary?) and that is all that is required. I was told today that a new client needs to be packaged up and roled out to every XP/VISTA system in SCCM currently for them to continue working with the upgrade to SP2. Is this correct? surely SCCM SP2 is backward compatible enough to keep working with the older clients installed on current XP and Vista and any new windows 7 systems will get the new client which allows them to be managed? Please let me know as this would turn an upgrade from being a relatively simple process into a potential nightmare !thanksdouglas

Hi Douglas,That is absolutely NOT correct. You must upgrade your sites to SP2 in order to fully support Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. I just upgraded a month ago. YOu can then upgrade the older clients at a later date if you wish. All new machines being built would then get the new client.

that is what I would have thought. I know there was a package release a while back allowing windows 7 clients to work with SP1 but certainly not the other way around? Can I then confirm that my initial thought was correct as Anati has suggested? I can upgrade my servers to SCCM 2007 SP2 and I don't need to worry about upgrading existing clients?thanks doug

All SCCM serice packs ALWAYS require a client upgrade on all clients. "R" upgrades (R2, R3 etc) generally do not require an update on clients. Both always need to be run on all servers. You clients will continue to function but to get the full benefits of the SP's you need to upgrade them ASAP.John Marcum | http://www.TrueSec.com/en/Training.htm | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jmarcum
