SCCM 2007 R2 multicast not working
I am working with System Center ConfigMgr 2007 R2, trying to get an operating system deployment task sequence to run using multicast. I have followed all the documentation specified in the TechNet library for SCCM, and it is still not working. I am PXE booting a test workstation successfully, it will access the SCCM infrastructure successfully, and when I select the task sequence, it will partition the disk, format, and then it hangs for a few minutes on the "Applying Operating System" step. It eventually moves onto the next step where it downloads the OS image, presumably via unicast, because I've seen screenshots of a multicast in operation and the screen on my test PC doesn't say anything about multicast sessions at all. It looks the same as a standard OS deployment without multicast. The server environment is: Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) SQL Server 2008 Express SCCM 2007 R2 SP2 WDS with transport server is installed ConfigMgr distribution point is enabled and running ConfigMgr multicast service point is enabled and running PXE Service point is enabled and running SCCM is running in mixed mode No firewall software is running on the server The entire SCCM system resides on a single physical server. Under the ConfigMgr distribution point properties: -I have enabled "Allow clients to transfer content from this distribution point using BITS, HTTP, and HTTPS" -multicast is enabed -under MultiCast address, I have tried both DHCP and specifying a multicast range, eg 224.0.0.0 - 224.255.255.255 -everything else left at defaults Under the OS Image distribution settings, I have "Allow this package to be transferred via multicast" enabled. If I check the box for "Transfer this package only via multicast", the deployment will fail with error code 0x80004005. If I leave this box unchecked, the multicast does not run, and instead the image downloads via unicast. Under the Task Sequence advertisement, I have "Download content locally when needed by running task sequence" selected. My DHCP server resides on a separate 2003 server. The PXE Service point resides on the SCCM server. I have multicast routing enabled on my core Cisco lan router, as well as PIM sparse-dense-mode enabled on all VLAN's. I've also tried PIM dense-mode. I have tried the following: -Specifying a multicast range to use under the distribution point properties -"Obtain IP address from DHCP server" and creating a multicast scope on my DHCP server -placing the server and workstation on the same VLAN -hubbing the server and workstation together using an unmanaged ethernet hub to bypass the network entirely -configuring the WDS service versus not configuring it -setting the multicast range manually in the WDS registry key on the server -Replacing the boot images in SCCM using boot.wim off the Windows 2008 R2 DVD to boot the workstation into PXE Nothing has made any difference. In my opinion the multicast times out on the client and it fails over to unicast. I can't even tell if the multicast session is starting because the client never joins it. I should note that this server was previously running Symantec Ghost 7.5 and multicasts always worked flawlessly under it, so I'm pretty sure my switching and routing are configured properly. When you enable Multicast on a DP you should see the new server role "Multicast" under Site Systems -> <Server-With-Multicast-Enabled> after the multicast function has been installed on the DP. This can take a while.Kind regards Tim Nilimaa (Sweden) Please remember to mark this answer as helpful if it helped you.

Hello, I was wondering if there's an update to this thread. I am experiencing the exact same issue as the original description, and my setup is similar, but I'll post my server environment anyway: Server 2008 SP2 (64-bit) (hosted on Xen VM) SQL Server 2005 SP3 SCCM 2007 SP2 R2 WDS with transport server Multicast SP is enabled PXE SP enabled SCCM mixed mode No firewall. No entries in Antivirus logs about not blocking anything. My other DP servers have the same configuration where it applies, only difference is that on 1 of them I have Server 2008 R2 installed as well. I've also performed all the recommended setup based on the Technet documentation and have also tried various multicast configurations to get this working and it seems I'm close but my DPs just won't multicast. I've tried just about everything I have read that makes sense to try on Technet, Windows-noob, and MyITforum. I have 5 DPs, on of them is on the primary site server, right now I've only tested multicast from 3 of the DPs. I've performed essentially all the troubleshooting steps that have been performed in the original post but I'll go over them just so nobody needs to ask: Under the ConfigMgr distribution point properties: -I have enabled "Allow clients to transfer content from this distribution point using BITS, HTTP, and HTTPS" -multicast is enabed -under MultiCast address, I have tried both DHCP and specifying a multicast range, eg 224.0.0.1 - 224.0.0.255 Under the OS Image distribution settings, I have "Allow this package to be transferred via multicast" enabled. Under the Task Sequence advertisement, I have "Download content locally when needed by running task sequence" selected. DHCP server resides on a separate server. PXE SP on each of my DPs since they all reside at remote locations. Multicast routing is enabled on my core Cisco lan router, and IGMP is enabled on network switches. I can use Ghost to Multicast on these same VLANs perfectly. I've even tried inchecking MUlticast on one DP, removing the PXE SP, uninstalling WDS and removing the RemoteInstall share, rebooted then reapplied WDS and recreated the PXE and Multicast SP roles. There are no errors in the mcsmgr.log, all entries are good health checks. I hate when people post huge log entries in these posts but since I have tried essentially everything I know to try, I'm going to post part of my SMSTS.log files from one of the clients so that hopefully someone with a trained eye will spot something. This is pretty much my last hope, we need to do a mass deployment starting in a couple weeks and multicast is necessary so we may need to return to using Ghost until I can hopefully get this sorted out. My apologies for the winded posting, but all the info is here ... thanks in advance for any advice. Here is part of the SMSTS.log: Performing multicast download from mcs://MYSCCMPRIMARYDP.COM/SMS_MCS/.sms_mcs?filePath=\\MYSCCMPRIMARYDP.COM\SMSPKGD$\UCC00057\&PackageFlags=201326592&packageID=UCC00057&version=5. encryption required:false ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Succeeded loading resource DLL 'X:\sms\bin\i386\1033\TSRES.DLL' ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Initializing Multicast Download ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Using MulticastURL: mcs://MYSCCMPRIMARYDP.COM/SMS_MCS/.sms_mcs?filePath=\\MYSCCMPRIMARYDP.COM\SMSPKGD$\UCC00057\&PackageFlags=201326592&packageID=UCC00057&version=5 ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Using Multicast Host:MYSCCMPRIMARYDP.COM FilePath:\\MYSCCMPRIMARYDP.COM\SMSPKGD$\UCC00057\ PackageID=UCC00057 Version=5 ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Using MCSServer: MYSCCMPRIMARYDP.COM ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Using RemotePath: \\MYSCCMPRIMARYDP.COM\SMSPKGD$\UCC00057\ ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Using PackageID: UCC00057 ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Using Version: 5 ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Using Encryption: false ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) No Need to create Authenticator Info ApplyOperatingSystem 7/27/2010 3:10:34 PM 840 (0x0348) Initializing HTTP transport. I was able to get multicasting successfully working. After several reinstallations of WDS and my PXE and Multicast service points, it turns out that our network people who had already verified router and switch settings, found that the very switch port that the Xen server was connected to didn't have multicast enabled. Go figure. I recommend anyone having multicasting issues have their network people carefully verify their network equipment configuration on the path between your multicast server and any destination VLANs you need to multicast to. Hopefully my other 4 DPs will work just as nicely when I test them in the coming days.

I just went thorugh this same thing. Turned out to be a firmware version on a core switch that had a bug... again, they claimed "ghost always worked"... so it had to be SCCM... but it was not. I have yet to see an issue where it wasn't the network and actually was SCCM, at least at the point where Multicast SP and PXE SP are working right and error free.

Is there a checklist for the routers/switch for this kind of configurations. I have read alot about multicast issues but no one has said "This configs needs to be setup for on the routers/switch. Thanks
