SCCM 2007 R2 and SQL 2008 R2
Hi, I am working in an environment that has a VM running SCCM 2007 R2 and SQL 2008 R2 we are suffering from performance issues on the server (2 X CPU, 4 GB RAM, Windows Server 2008 R2), and are upgrading to SCCM R3 would we be better off building a new SQL server and pointing SCCM at that, rather than increase the CPU's & RAM on the VM. I think our best way is to build a new SQL server, but wanted to check with the experts before making a recommendation. Thanks for any help David

Hi, I would start by increasing the Memory as it is a simpler task than installing a new SQL and move the DB, However make sure you have DISK I/O enough as well, Disk IO is crucial to Performance in SCCM and not only Memory and CPU. Jorgen, Thanks for that I will raise a change request to get it increased do you recommend double the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.

8 GB would be a start, don't forget to adjust the amount of memory SQL is allowed to allocate afterwards, Jrgen-- My System Center blog ccmexec.com -- Twitter @ccmexec

And, as Jorgen pointed out, storage IO. Both SQL Server and ConfigMgr make heavy use of the disks. Thus, if you are doing any of the followng, you will be causing performance issues: - Using dynamic disks - Storing virtual disks on shared physical disks - Sharing physical disks with other resources - Not separting the OS, SQL DB, and ConfigMgr partitions onto separate sets of physical disksJason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com | Twitter @JasonSandys
