Take a look here: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/post/Capture-User-Files-and-Settings-in-Offline-Mode-(WinPE)-with-ConfigMgr-2007.aspxIts an example of an offline hardlink migration. It does require SCCM SP2 and USMT 4.0.My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/

In a previous post (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrosd/thread/914c52f6-46a8-4e90-b153-7a207796b12a) I read that you are trying to deploy Windows 7 and for deploying Windows 7 you already need SCCM 2007 SP2My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/

A replace scenario implies that the old PC will not be used again for the users (I may however be reused as the replacement for the next person, ie you are recycleing assets) For this you generally require 2 task sequences, the first one captures the user state and the second one deploys the os and restores the user state. When using a replace senario from Windows XP to Windows 7 you MUST use USMT 4.0. USMT 4.0 is included in Windows 7 WAIK. SCCM requires SP2 to deploy Windows 7 Machines. SCCM SP2 includes WAIK for Windows 7. Thus by the fact that you have SCCM SP2 inplies that SCCM needs no aditional Software to use USMT 4.0. Please Note the is a BIG difference between R2 and SP2.The first thing you need to do is create a USMT 4.0 Package, follow these steps: http://scug.dk/blogs/configurationmanager/archive/2009/09/10/configuring-usmt-4-0-for-configuration-manager-part-1.aspx. NOTE: If you plan to use USMT 4.0 Pleae make sure your source computer is running the SP2 version of the SCCM client. If it is not you may experience problems with USMT 4.0The next thing to do is create the Phase 1 Task Sequence - This does the Capture (These are High Level Steps Only) You can start with a standard OS deployment task Sequence and just delete the steps you dont need.High level steps for Phase 1 are: Gather Info Set Environment Variables (for USMT config etc.) Request State Store Capture User State Release State Store ShutDown PC End The above steps are EXACTLY the same a a refresh scenario up to the point where you would restart in PE. In the Restart step of a normal deployment you would apply Windows PE. In this task sequence you dont associate any boot images with it. If You wanted to you could hoever assosiate the a PE image and move most of the above steps into Windows PE and do an Offline USMT Capture.Once Phase 1 has completed you need to create a computer assosiation. There is plenty of help to do this the point is you need to assosiate the New computer with the Old one, this is how SCCM determines what state to restore to the PC. (If you do a refresh scenario SCCM automatically creates an assosiaten to track the progress, the assosiation in the replace scenario just assosiates the old computer back with itself)Phase 2. is just reusing your standed refresh task sequence with one difference, in a refresh scenario you would start the deployment via an advertisement to a client PC, in a replace scenario you MUST start the TS from PXE/USB/CD. as the target machine is probable bare metal, or if not you dont want to preserve anything on it. If you were to try and start phase to from an within the OS you would overrite your assosiation and end up restoreing the incorrect state (See Above)

If You wanted to you could hoever assosiate the a PE image and move most of the above steps into Windows PE and do an Offline USMT Capture. That's not possible in any default SCCM 2007 SP2 task sequence without some workarounds, here's one way - http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/1735-using-offline-mode-in-windows-pe-using-usmt-4-via-a-task-sequence-in-sccm-2007-sp2 here's another - http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/post/Capture-User-Files-and-Settings-in-Offline-Mode-(WinPE)-with-ConfigMgr-2007.aspx cheers niall My step by step SCCM Guides windows-noob on Twitter

Dear Osfreedom, I am in a situation to perform a refresh and looking for some help on the TS Steps. i see that you were able to perform the same, can you help me sharing the TS XML files or steps to perform the same. I also has few questions on the same. Can we initiate the Hardware refresh on OLD PC via USB / DVD from Full OS? or is it only to be initiated by Advertisement? Can we route the statestore to an externally connected USB rather to an SMP? thank you

Hi, Please find the steps for replace task sequence. 1, add state migration role service for site server and configure migration point storage space 2, create computer association old & new 3, created two refresh scenario task sequence. 4, one task sequence for capture user state on state migration point. 5, another task sequence for format partition, apply os image & restore saved user state from state migration point. Thanks.
