SCCM 2007 R2 Central Server Migration
Hi all, I need to migrate my SCCM 2007 R2 Central Server (running on Windows 2008 Standard x64) to a new Win2008x64 Server. I have version 4.00.6221.1000. It is parent to two child Primary sites (same config as listed). The existintg server is dying. I also want to install SP2 in readiness for Windows 7/2008R2 deployment The SQL database it is pointing to is staying the same. Has about 2000 clients and in a single 2003 domain The Central Server has collections, boundries, packages, OSD's and advertisments. It is also the FSP / MP / SUP and Reporting point. However all clients point to either of the Primary Child sites as MP's depending on their location ie UK or France - and the Central is the fallback. I have read a couple of other posts on this scenario and want to list my steps and get your expert assessment/opinions please Build new Windows 2008 x64 server w. new name and install SCCM 2007 R2 with new Site name Attach to existing confgmgr setup as child primary site? Promote it to Central Site Point 2 child sites to new central site (hopefully 'set parent site' button won't be greyed out) move all site system roles off old central server and install on new central server move all boundries and run AD discovery decomm old central site server leave for a week to settle upgrade new central site to SP2 upgrade priamry child sites to SP2 At what point could/would I use the Transfer Site settings option when I right click on my existing central site server? - at the very least the Package and Colleciton propoerties? - What about the Site SEttings - could it be used in the steps above? Given all servers are up and running and it isn't a backup restore job - this is 'relatively' strarighforward? Thanks in advance

I would just use ConfigMgr's backup and restore mechanisms to change the hardware (given that servername, domain, partition layout etc can stay the same). See also http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmgrsetup/thread/138bc32d-a163-4ceb-b443-db63231550bf

Hi Torsten, the windows sername will be different. IS this OK? Would it be OK to build then a Windows 2008 R2 server (instead of building a new Windows 2008 x64) and carry out the restore? Are teh backup /restore steps straightforward? - I would have to install SCCM 2007 R2 as a vanilla install first.

You have to keep the servername if you want to use ConfigMgr's restore mechanism. It's ok to restore to a newer OS. If I had the choice between (a) changing the server name and therefore having to use that complicated procedure above and (b) keeping the name and restoring then I'd vote for (b).

I see, So - do a full backup under Site Mantenenace / Tasks Rename Windows Server holding the Central Site Server (should I do anything in SCCM itself) Build new (windows 2008 R2) windows server with old name (new IP address) - What about the SCCM Site name - obviouly must stay the same? Install vanilla SCCM Perform restore This will import packages etc etc and all the Roles. this sound OK? then I install SP2 on the new central and then the child primary's.
