SCCM 2007 OSD Vista woes.
Hi, I am trying to install vista x64 via the SCCM 2007 OSD. I made an "Operating System Image" from the install.wim on the Vista DVD. I am able to get it to PXE boot, however it comes up with the following error: File: \Boot\BCD Status: 0xc0000098 Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry. Questions: 1. Which Boot wim should I use. Theone that is installed with SCCM 2007 (Boot image (x64))or should I use the boot.wim on the vista DVD? 2. If I am to use the Vista boot.wim there is to images within it one called: Microsoft Windows Longhorn WinPE and the other "Microsoft Windows Longhorn Setup"? Any advice greatly appreciated, Thanks, Ward.

You should use the boot image that is installed with SCCM 2007

Bryce is right, in your Task Sequences, you specify to use the x86 or x64 Windows PE Boot Image which is used to boot into the WinPE environment. WinPE is basically a stripped down OS that SCCM uses to handle the actual .WIM installation. Once the Task Sequence has booted the PC up using the WinPE environment, it will download the actual image .WIM file and apply it to the hard drive (after partitioning and formatting, if specified). I beleive that the WinPE is only about 125 MB in size and I think that it loads itself into a RAMdrive in your systems memory so that it can take control of the hard drive and format it without needing to reboot. Anyway, you should also know that if you're going to deploy Vista using SCCM, you're going to run into issues with it deploying to the D: drive, rather than the C: drive. There are a few threads also devoted to that mind bending problem.

The above error translates to --> "The volume for a file has been externally altered such that the opened file is no longer valid." Also, check whether you are following the process mentioned in the below blog? http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/667-deploy-windows-7/Anoop C Nair - This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees, and confers no rights. |Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. that boot image is for SCCM 2007 SP1, you need SCCM 2007 SP2 for deploying windows 7, it includes the WAIK 2 which will update your boot images to 6.1.7600.16385 My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady
