SCCM 2007,MDT 2012 is it possible to do a simple UDI task?
Hi Let me explain what I am trying to do. Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction. 1. I am trying to simplify the pxe task for our techs. I would like to advertise a non mandatory task to unknown computers collection. in SCCM the option is selected to respond to unknown computers. 2. The client is booted to pxe, and the tech enters the computer name, clicks next a few times, the drive is partitioned and formatted the tech then picks the add on packages they would like to install as well and the re-imaging begins. I am running SCCM 2007 and MDT 2012. I know I must use MDT 2012 to accomplish what I need. The problem is every blog I read about UDI, says use the MDT to create an UDI task, which I do but I am finding by doing this it adds so much to the task sequence that I really don't want or need such as USMT, capturing the user state, validating the BIOS etc. I am trying to do a really EASY UDI deployment is this possible? All I really want my udi task to do is 1.Boot to PXE 2. Run through the MDT wizard enter a computer name, partition and format the 100% of the drive. 3. Choose any additional packages needed to install from the list 4. Click next and imaging begins. All while having this look and feel. I am trying to simplify things too much?

Just remove the steps you don't need... Make sure to keep the step which starts the wizard and steps which take care of the background picturesMy Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/ Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude

Thanks Peter A couple quick questions, to get that look that is in the attached screen shot above. I must make an MDT boot image and not use the ones that come with SCCM, CORRECT? Could you tell me which step start the wizard and take care of the background pictures? I have been using the MDT UDI task sequence wizard to create my task in sccm is this correct? or should I be using the udi replace task wizard to create my task in sccm? Thanks again to everyone on this forum you are invaluable.

You can just use the (default) boot images from SCCMThe Set Status <number> -steps take care of the backgroundDepends on your goals... The default UDI Task Sequence is almost always the right pick, except when you also want to use the replace scenario. My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/ Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude

Hi Peter Thanks for your response. When you say default UDI Task sequence, do you mean Client Task sequence OR User Driven Installation Task sequence from the menu?. I picked User Driven Installation Task sequence from the drop down menu. it did give me the look and feel I am looking for, and it did restore the machine, but in the advertisement status it says failed but I can't seem to figure out which step it failed at, can you tell me which log I am looking for to try to debug the failure and I will post it here. Thanks for your help it is much appreciated.

You picked the correct one, as the (normal) Client Task Sequence doesn't use the UDI. The main logfile is still the same, so you should be looking at the smsts.log.My Blog: http://www.petervanderwoude.nl/ Follow me on twitter: pvanderwoude

Thanks Peter, one of my packages wasn't on the dp which caused the failure. I have a couple more questions. How do I add a password to the boot media. I made a MDT x64 Boot image, but can't seem to add a password to it. I ran the boot media wizard and put a password and then choose the MDT x64 Boot image run it from, but the I am never prompted for a password when the machine pxe boots to the boot image? Also I have not started designing the UDI screens yet with my domain info, but I have noticed that if I say join the domain within the TS and when the machine PXE boots from the boot image and the MDT wizard kicks of I can not manually enter the domain in the field, I can only join to a workgroup. Do you have any idea as to why this is happening? Thanks as always

Hi, This tutorial may help Deploying a UDI Client Task Sequence with MDT 2012 RC1 integrated in Configuration Manager 2012 I set it up also using SCCM 07 and MDT 12 and doing exatclly what you are looking to do except for the PXE boot. You can just remove the pages in the UDI that you do not need and then go to the TS and remove them from there also.
