SCCM/SCOM Design
Hey guys,
I have just been given a proposal from one of the techy guys in my project team for a SCCM/SCOM design, which I have grave concerns about and not being a expert in these products I can't really comment and need your help in order to guide me to some useful
feedback to the techy team.
The requirement is only for server/desktop patch updates and monitoring, nothing else from the SCCM/SCOM suites is required.
The requirements are:
4 sites, one main central site which is the main datacenter (site 1), no users on this site, but we have a 6 VM servers on this site.
Site 2 - 1700 client desktops, 15 physical servers, 1 x Netapps SAN.
Site 3 - 500 Client Desktops, 15 physical servers, 1 x Netapps SAN.
Site 4 - 100 client Dekstops, 15 physical servers, 1 x Netapps SAN.
All sites are connected via a Direct internet link (DIA) of 2MBPS.
The design the techy team has give me is, all on site 1:
1 x SCCM server with 2vCPU 4GB vRAM 200GB HDD (from SAN)
1 x SCOM server with 2vCPU 4GB vRAM 200GB HDD (from SAN)
1 x Consolidated SQL Cluster
I'm not sure this is correct. Can you guys please advise. All suggestions welcome.

For ConfigMgr I would have a look at

How about the other sites? I would consider plaing a secondary site server to support site 2, 3 and 4.Kent Agerlund | My blogs: http://blog.coretech.dk/author/kea/ and http://scug.dk/ | Twitter @Agerlund | Linkedin: /kentagerlund

At this time, the team have not included a secondary server on the other sites...is this required? if so what spec and what is the purpose of these servers? The team are saying one central server should be sufficient as we are not utilising the full SCCM/SCOM
capabuilities.

The secondary sites depends on the bandwidth you have between the HQ and the branches. If you do not have secondary sites you will not be able to control the bandwidth being used by the Configmgr. server.Kent Agerlund | My blogs: http://blog.coretech.dk/author/kea/ and http://scug.dk/ | Twitter @Agerlund | Linkedin: /kentagerlund

Keep in mind that it is recommend to NOT share SQL between CM and OM. Also keep in mind that you can’t share SSRS between CM and
OM. It is best practices to have SQL installed locally for CM.
And from personal experience, unless you has a excellent SAM and VM team you will have performance issues and you will need to work with
them to resolve those issue. To date I have yet find an excellent VM and SAN team.
