Hi everyone,
I have a customer on SBS 2008 who wants to migrate to 2011. What makes this tricky is that during this migration, they'd also like me to fix a typo in their domain name that has been there since inception.
I've found a bunch of articles on interforest migrations, but they all require domain trusts.
At this point, I think I only have 2 options:
Option 1:
Install a 2008 R2 server and promote it to a DC on the SBS 2008 domain. Migrate AD to the R2 DC, and transfer the FSMO roles to it (at this point I should have 21 days to complete the "migration," right?).
Use rendom to rename the domain at this point(?).
Install SBS 2011 and let it take over the FSMO roles on the newly corrected (because it was renamed) domain.
Option 2:
Install a 2008 R2 server and promote it to a DC on the SBS 2008 domain. Migrate AD to the R2 DC, and transfer the FSMO roles to it.
Install a second 2008 R2 server as a DC with the corrected domain, and establish domain trusts (will this work if the new DC has the FSMO roles but a SBS server is still present?).
Use ADMT to transfer AD to the corrected domain.
Install SBS 2011 in migration mode.
I'm leaning toward option 1 (only requires one additional server which I'll use as a backup DC on the new domain anyway), but I'm concerned about whether or not I'll be able to get access to the exchange mailboxes on the old SBS box after I use rendom, since SBS doesn't support renaming a domain.
There are only about 20 users. Maybe it would be easier to recreate them?
