Rollup Update install error - error code 2771
When trying to install the rollup update 7 on a hub/cas server, I get the following error almost immediately:
"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package,. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2771."
I get the same thing when installing from a downloaded install (that I've used on other servers) or via windows update.

I also get two errors in the event log:
1. MSIinstaller - event id 10005 - same as above but adds "The arguments are:AdminTools" at the end.
2. MSIinstaller - event id 1023 - "... could not be installed. Error code 1603. Additional info is available..."(no add'l info is in the log file referenced)

I had a similar, if not exact, problem trying to install rollup update 6 and couldn't find any info then... or now. Saw one post about disabling symantec endpoint protection (which we don't use) but I tried closing our trend a/v but no diff.

Oh yeah, the server is Win2k3 R2 x64 SP2.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Frank

MSI installer error1603 is pretty generic error and it might be due to many problems.
To find more specific cause you need enable MSI verbose logging while installing UR7 with below command.
Exchange2007-KB<kb # of Rollup>-x64-EN.msp /lxv* c:\<kb # of rollup>.log

Once setup fails with error, open log file generated during this and snip the errors portion and paste it to this forum.

Besides, please download Rollup 7 from Microsoft again and then install with the command mentioned by Amit.

Hmmm... Logging... Who 'da thunk it... Thanks for the suggestion. :-)
Below are the all lines from the log containing error or debug. The "...." means that the previous two lines were duplicated numerous times.

The only real reference I found to the admintools error was at this link but it wasn't very helpful. http://blogs.msdn.com/windows_installer_team/archive/2005/08/17/451516.aspx

Thanks again for any help

Hey all,

Hi,

Please try to backup the below registry
HKLM/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/EXCHANGE/V8.0/ADMIN TOOLS
Imported the same key from a working server which had RU7 installed.

If theres no work server, then please try to check event log. If we have event 1023,then please try to find (first part of GUID noted in the 1023 event ID) and then search it in Registry.

Besides, please try to find the rollups that you have installed from Add/Remove.If rollup which you have installed but you cannot find it in Add/Remove,then please try to install that rollup first and then install Rollup 7.

Regards,

Xiu

We encountered this same issue when installing RU7, when we searched for the GUID: {24B2C164-DE66-44FE-B468-A46D9D5E6B31} (based on the 1023 event below)it led us to the C:\windows\installer\{24B2C164-DE66-44FE-B468-A46D9D5E6B31} directory which contained the powershell.exe.

Upon launching powershell.exe we encountered an error asking if it was ok to run anunsigned app. So then I remembered, we recently deployed a GPO to restrict the execution of unsigned powershell scripts!!!!

Once I excluded our accounts from the restriction, we were able to successfully install RU7! Hope this helps!

Definately closer... but still not quite there.

The registry keys are identical between a working and the non-working server.

I was also able to track the guid, {24B2C164-DE66-44FE-B468-A46D9D5E6B31}, down to powershell.exe in the windows\installer folder. Running it, however, then gives me the following error message:

The image file c:\windows\installer\{24B2C164-DE66-44FE-B468-A46D9D5E6B31}\powershell.exe is valid, but is for a machien type other than the current machine.

I get this same error regardless of the execution policy set within Powershell... and I also get the same message trying to run powershell.exe from this folder old the server that I was able to upgrade to RU7. The working server has only the CA role installed, while the non-working server has both the CA and HT roles installed... if that makes a difference.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!
Frank

UPDATE: I have posted my own version - http://restartis.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/error-while-installing-rollup-10-for-exchange-2007-sp1/

I had a similar issue with UR10 for Exchange 2007 SP1. This link (http://airtonleal.blogspot.com/2009/03/troubleshooting-microsoft-exchange.html) helped me understand the issue and successfully install UR10.

Here same issue (error 2271) with exchange 2010 SP3 Rollup 10.

What is the solution for this issue?

May 13th, 2015 2:28pm

I tried an workaround.

I copied all the previous RU installable files on C:\temp folder, then ran the RU7 update, which worked fine.

I used the command <RU MSP File> /LXV* <logfilename.log> to identify the error. It shows the message that it tries to find the old RU update files on C:\temp of the original directory which we installed from.

Try this solution, I used this solution for 6 server and it worked.
