Right-click context menu in desktop appearing slow win 8.1

Hi,

I have just upgraded from windows 8 to win 8.1 everything is fine except the context menu I don't know why it is so delaying. Every time I do right click on desktop to refresh it takes almost 15 seconds to appear.

Help me guys.

Many thanks.

Umair.

Hi,

In my opinion, this problem caused by two reasons. One is 3rd shell extension reason, the other is system performance. You can follow the steps below to fix this problem.

First of all, click the link below to download ShellExView:

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

1. This program does not require installation, just right click and run as Administrator

2. From the menu, click on Options then click on Filter by Extension Type and select Context Menu

3. On the list, you'll see some of the entries with pink background, those are installed by the third party software

4. Hold down CTRL Key and select all of them then click on the red button on top left corner to disable.

5. Click on the Options again and select Restart Explorer

6. Now try to right click on desktop to see if it fix your problem. If it does then start to enable one by one and repeat step 5 until the problem occurs again, that's the offending extension.

In addition, does this problem occurs after system startup? If so, I would like to suggest you to perform a Clean Boot to check whether this problem caused by 3rd program or service. Refer to the link below for more details.

'NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension' C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvshext.dll was the culprit for my system.

Thanks for the solution.

Thank you so much !

I was having the same problem. Thank you for being here for us this issue almost rendered my desktop useless and your solution worked. Please continue being awesome

I have one question.  What do we do with the offending extension ? Do we just leave it disabled.. or is there a way to delete it ?

The one that was plaguing me turned out to be

TheDeskTopContextMenu Class context menu (aka igfxDTCM Module) version 6.15.10.3621 from the Intel Common User interface. Its a file extension for Directory/Background.

Thanks a lot for the solution,

it was so irritating to wait 15-20 sec for the menu.

I had a problem in bluetooth option - BthSendToContextMenuExt Class ,Context Menu  C:\Windows\system32\BSAppShlExt.dll

I already solve this problem.
At start sorry for my bad  english.
I just turn off Windows Defender and my problem  is solved.
Right click appears in 0.001 sec.
Just disable Windows Defender and install other antivirus or wharever to defend  your PC.
Hope this fix your problem.
Bye bye.

This seems to be working really nice, but there is one problem: the Restart Explorer option only closes the explorer, and does not start it again. I can open a folder to test the context menu, but now I have to restart my computer to start working again. Is this normal? Will this also happen next time? Is there a workaround?

EDIT: after restarting my computer, it worked. For me, the problem was in the BthSendToContextMenuExt Class, just as in two of the replies above.

Hi, Lewistrick

If your Explore restart failed, you can try to create a new task in Task Manager, then type explorer.exe and press Enter.

After that, Explorer process should be recreated.

This is just a workaround method, to troubleshoot your problem, you can check Event Viewer if it identify the problem.
