Retrieving Lost System Administrator Accounts
I have a 2005 SSRS setup. Problem is the System Adminnistrators in there already left the company and their Domain Accounts are the only members of System Administrators. Accounts are already a year old, so they are basically not existing. I own sysdamin in the MS SQL Server Engine where the Report Server is, I own the service account running the services (SSRS and MS SQL). I own a local Admin account in box. I keep getting not enough permission messages everytime I work around the SSRS Instance in SSMS and I get this message when I run any/all the reports. An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted) Cannot create a connection to data source 'DataSourceOlap'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) The physical TCP/IP connection failed: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. The peer prematurely closed the connection. I'm thinking that I need to reconfigure the Datasource but i keep getting the not enough permission message. That is why I think I need to get my domain account the System Administrator role to be able to do all necessary changes to fix this. Sorry if this turn out to be a no brainer. Actually I would be very happy if it turn out to be, so I can get on withe solution and appease my users who has been bugging me with this for weeks.

I own a local Admin account in box. An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted). Cannot create a connection to data source 'DataSourceOlap'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) Hello, Don't use SSMS for this; it won't work. Logon to the box, start Internet Explorer explicit with "Run as Administrator" and open the Report Manager URL, should be http://localhost/ReportServer. Goto "Side Setting" => Security, here you can manage security settings and add your account to SysAdmin role. The error message is something completly different, it only means that the specified report can't be rendered, because the security credential for the data source "DataSourceOlap" aren't valid. In Report Manager you can change the sec settings for that data source.Olaf Helper * cogito ergo sum * errare humanum est * quote erat demonstrandum * Wenn ich denke, ist das ein Fehler und das beweise ich tglich Blog Xing

Hi Olaf, Thank you for the response. I did try adding my account (a local administrator on the server) in the Site Settings - Security - Configure site-wide security. However, I get this weird message everytime I do. I enter my account in the Group or user name field, check System Administrator and/or System User, click Ok and then it gives me an Error page with this message, "The user or group name 'OURDOMAIN\EXDBA1' is not recognized. (rsUnknownUserName) ". It is actually weird why SSRS seems to make a fuss of the existing System Administrators who is already an invalid account and ignoring my command/request to add me as a System Administrator. I know you said using MSSMS won't work but when performing the same task I get this message box, "The permission granted to user 'OURDOMAIN\MYACCT' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)(Report Services SOAP Proxy Source) Additional information: The permission granted to user 'OURDOMAIN\MYACCT' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)(ReportingServicesLibrary)" I'd like to know if there is a work around of getting my account System Administrator without going through the page or SSMS. Is it stored in the Registry or ReportServer database? You think I can edit it from there directly? Thanks again!

Hi Count Digit, Hi Count Digit, Firstly, admin of Reporting Services (SSRS) is the administrators of the server machine, the local administrators can add other admin for SSRS. So to be a admin of SSRS, you can add the account to the administrators groups in server machine: right-click your computer -> Manage-> click local user and group->click groups->right-click administrator groups->select Add button to add the valid account to this group. Here please make sure the account is a valid account and you are a administrator, please contact your system administrator to make sure these two points. After that, open Reporting Services Configuration Manager tool, then click Service Account, then changes the account to the Account you added in the top steps. Open the report manager, click Site settings tab on the homepage, then click Security tab, please adds the Account to be Administrators. If you want to retrieve the data from the datasource, you should also ask your DB admin to add the Account to datasource, otherwise you will also have no permission to datasource.
