Restrict word document to partial read

Hi

I'm using Office Word 2010 and SharePoint 2010 standard. A user has requested that certain parts of the document is hidden from view as this is privlidged information. I suppose the norm is to create two word files, one which is secured, however this will mean maintaing two files. Hence how can I secure parts of a single word file to certain users?

I'm loading word docs onto sharepoint but don't think sharepoint is able to do this. Is this possible through sharepoint or word itself ?

Thanks

To my knowledge, I can think of the following: -

  1. In Word: Use Forms and combine that with some form of Macro to hide / display content.  Not easily done though.  Alternatively use the font options and set the confidential section to Hidden but anyone with a basic knowledge of word can undo this.
  2. SharePoint: Nothing that I know of, in either SharePoint / Office Interaction or the Web Applications.

I'd be interested in any solution that does arise though.

Hi

First I tried hiding the text and then removing the ability to format and edit. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-hide-text-in-microsoft-word-2007-reveal-it-protect-it/

This worked but its possible to use other programs to override this. So no go area.

I've found another way. Hide the text as before but then export to a PDF. I've tried this and the hidden text isnt visible and I believe the export has permanently removed the hidden text. Could this be confirmed?

So the plan is to use word automation services to convert to Pdf's. Is it possible to replace the hidden text with 'restricted'. So we all know its removed deliberately? I guess the pdf parser will need modifying, which may be more trouble than its worth..

Thanks
