Reports fail after upgrade from SQL 2008 ro 2008 R2
Hi everyone, I performed an upgrade of our sql server from 2008 to 2008 R2, but was unaware of the symetric key and so this was lost. I have deleted the encrypted content but I now need to restore access to the reports. I am unsure as to how to do this as I am a DBA and these were created by one of our developers. Can anyone tell me how to rebuld the connection strings or point me to a good article outlining the procedure. Many Thanks Alan

Ah, the "encrypted content" probably included the reports. The developers are going to have to rebuild the catalog as the two report processors (2008 and 2008 R2) are incompatible--they can't process each other's reports. Of course you have a system backup. Restore and work from there. I suggest reverting back to pre-update and using Reporting Services Configuration Manager to backup the keys. I also suggest backing up the Reporting Services 2008 catalog with a tool like RSScripter. It might also be able to upload the entire catalog to 2008 R2. hth__________________________________________________________________ William Vaughn Author, Mentor, Trainer, MVP Beta V Corporation William Vaughn's blog Hitchhikers Guide to Visual Studio and SQL Server (7th Edition) The Owl Wrangler a fantasy fiction novel Please click the Mark as Answer button if a post solves your problem!

Hi William, thanks for the reply, let me expand further. We have two drives c: (operating system) and e: (SQL databases & logs). I took a full backup of the c: and our shcedule took backups of all the databases including the master databases. Before I consider a rollback to pre-update which I'm worried is going to be messy, is there any way we can restore access to these reports without restoring the backups? My concern is that when I roll the OS back, the databases particularly the master won't be accessible as they will have been updated to R2. I do have a backup of the master database pre-update and can restore it as long as the sql service is able to start. Is there any way to access the reports without reverting to a backup? Thanks again Alan

I'm not there and can't really tell what's left after you "deleted the encrypted content" so I don't know exactly what you'll need to fix the problem. The Master database does NOT contain the reports. These are contained in separate ReportingServices databases that should have been backed up regularly along with other user databases. If they were not, and you purged them, then I expect your only option is to redeploy the reports.__________________________________________________________________ William Vaughn Author, Mentor, Trainer, MVP Beta V Corporation William Vaughn's blog Hitchhikers Guide to Visual Studio and SQL Server (7th Edition) The Owl Wrangler a fantasy fiction novel Please click the Mark as Answer button if a post solves your problem!

Hi MLEGENDS, Thanks for your question and William’s replies. For more information and detail steps about upgrading Reporting Services, I would recommend you refer to this article of the MSDN: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143747.aspx. Hope it helps you. If you have anything unclear, please feel free to let me know. Hi Guys, thanks for the replies, I got it sorted out without having to revert to a backup. All I needed to do was restore the connections to the data sources and the reports were accessible again. So yes william, I could have gone back to a backup but this would have been a longer and most possibly a more painful route. I now have a backup of the symetric key and another feather of experience in my cap (just wish experience wasn't so painful sometimes). Once again thanks for your responses guys Many thanks Alan
