Report models deprecated in SSRS 2012
Hi all We've installed SSRS 2012 in our test environment. During the testing we've noticed that report models are deprecated in SSRS 2012. A lot of our solutions use Report Builder and Report Models. Our users/customers are able to create their own reports using SSRS/SharePoint/Report Builder. We're also using the Report Model security features (to define read access of entities). Our customers aren't able to create DataSets (i.e. SQL-Queries) because they aren't IT professionals. What is the replacement/new feature for the Report Model in SSRS 2012? Regards, Kantiran

Hi Kantiran, Customers can continue to use existing report models as a source for 2012 report builder. You (IT), however, can't create report models using 2012 tools. You have to use SSRS 2008 R2 or prior BIDS tools to create new or edit existing report models. So if you have several solutions using report models, you can still use them as a data source, but you should plan on upgrading/moving away from them. Alternative is new BISM (business intelligence semantic model), particularly SSAS tabular mode. Please post back with any additional questions. Hi Thanks for your answer. However, I don't understand in which way the Tabular Model should be able to replace a report model. Our customers just create reports of "lists" (i.e. simplified and filtered tables). They can select rows of different tables (using "joins") and drag them on a report. SSAS (including tabular model) ist all about dimensions & measurements. I've connected to a tabular model using report builder 3. I don't see how to acomplish these simple tasks. The "Tables" in the model result in Dimension structures. I guess the Tabular Model is more like an OLAP/cube thing than a relational model (-> report model). Please correct me if I'm wrong... i hope I am... Regards, Kantiran

Ive expected that we arent the only company relying on Report Models doesnt seem so. Weve decided to use a 2008 instance to manage the models for now. Furthermore, well start evaluating a new reporting product which suits our needs for future projects. Regards, Kantiran

Even i have similar problem, our customer is used to create ad-hoc reports in Report builder on ReportModels but now we have moved to SQLServer 2012 and now planning to convert the Report models into SSAS tabular model so can anyone help me to understand 1. difference between ReportModels and Tabular models.? 2. is it possible to achieve all the feature of ReportModels in Tabular models? Thanks in advance MukeshMukesh

Hi, Currently no migration path given by Microsoft from 2008 Report Models to 2012 BISM (they call , Business Intelligence semantic model) .But you can use current 2008 instance for editing and deploying report-model on 2012 , its fully supporting. Please go through this forum for more details: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqldenreportingservices/thread/3ee2f557-02fd-44db-8ca9-98559f0036e2/ *Regards*\n *Samay Shrivastava* \n*Please mark it as Answered if it answered your question or mark it as Helpful if it helped you solve your problem.*

This is Ridiculous! Microsoft - Step up and relate to your cleints needs. We need you to show leadership here and come up with a Plan. You cant just pull the rug under your cleints feets. There has to be a Migration Plan. I have not seen other vendors doing this. EveryBody has a migration plan. You should too or risk having your cleints lose faith in your products and Migrate to other platforms where I am sure cleints are not treated in this fashion.
