Report Builder 3.0 does not connect but 2.0 does
Hi All, I currently using SQL Report Builder 2008 2.0 and connecting to a SQL Server 2008 R2. I want to upgrade to Report Builder 3.0 but I get the following message: "Unable to connect to the server that is specified in the URL, *****, Make sure that the server is running, the URL is correct, and you have permission to use the server" As I mentioned, 2.0 was connecting fine with that same URL. Any ideas on why this isn't work in 3.0?

Hi JJSmith919, Please check the specific version of your Reporting Services. The specific version of Reporting Services is 10.50.1600.1(No Service Pack). We can get the version at the bottom of the Report Server homepage http://<servername>/reportserver. If the version of your Reporting Services is 2008 R2, please refer to the following suggestion to troubleshoot this issue: • Try to use IP to access the Report Server from the Report Builder 3.0. • Run the Report Builder under the domain account. • Check the Reporting Services error logs(By default, it can be found from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10_50.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles). Hi Bin Long, Version is 10.50.1600.1 I tried the IP instead but I still encounter the same error. I also tried running under the domain account and I get the same error. Report Server logs do not show my attempt at connecting. Thanks again for the help.

Hi JJSmith919, Have you try to access to Report Manager and then click "Report Builder" button to start Report Builder 3.0? Please refer to the article about Start Report Builder: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159221.aspx There is an article about How to: Configure Report Builder Access, please see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365173.aspx If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask. Hi Bin Long, I think I see the problem now, but I'm not sure I know how to solve it. I installed Report Builder 3.0 on my local machine. Launching Report Builder from Report Manager looks for the ReportBuilder.application.manifest file on the server, right? Do I need to installed Report Builder 3.0 on the server as well?

You can change the location, easier to install. On the local machine, you can open the report builder and point to the server. the local account should have access to the server.

Hi Kiranmayee, Pointing Report Builder to the server creates the original problem (see post #1). Now that I say it out loud, the two problems aren't really connected. The original problem is I can't connect to the report server using RB3.0, but RB2.0 works. The second problem is I can't launch RB from report manager. I can't do this with 2.0 or 3.0...although I am not worried about this problem. I did check and my local account is part of the admin group which has access to that server.

I checked mine just now, and its working fine, and able to connect to http://reportservername/reportserver I would suggest to uninstall the app and reinstall again. that works sometimes.

Kiranmayee, Thanks for trying to help but I don't think your solutions are what I am looking for. Our environments are problem different. I've gone through the basic troubleshooting issues (installing/reinstalling, etc) multiple times.
