Report Builder 3.0 can't connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services
I have installed: SQL Server 2008 R2 with Reporting ServicesReport Builder 2.0Report Builder 3.0 I've configured reporting services: Web service url: http:// localhost/reportserverreport manager url: http:// localhost/reports I've given all available rights to my account to access report server. But i cannot connect Report Builder 3.0 to the reportserver. Report Builder 2.0 works well, same with the web site. I've searched google and the forum for answers, and found a possible solution to comment out the line RSWindowsNegotiate from rsreportserver.config file (original topic) but that didn't change anything. Any suggestions? Goran

Hi Goran, From your description, do you open the Report Builder 3.0 from Start-> Programs or from the Report Manager? If it is the former, since Report Builder 3.0 introduces more features that Report Builder 2.0, I suggest that you set Report Builder 3.0 as default and access Report Builder 3.0 via report manager. To do this, please follow the steps below: Open the report manager, click Site Settings. In the Custom Report Builder launch URL textbox, type in http://<servername>/ReportBuilder/ReportBuilder_3_0_0_0.application For more information about configuring Report Builder access on the report server, please see: Configure Report Builder Access If the issue is that you can access Report Builder 3.0 successfully from report manager but it cannot connect to the report server, I suggest that you uninstall Report Builder 3.0 and then reinstall the Stand-alone installer of Report Builder 3.0 from the link below: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Report Builder 3.0 If the issue persists, please capture a screenshot of the issue and provide the detailed error message for further analysis. Hi Goran, Thanks for your posting. According to the versions information you posted, you are using SQL Server 2008 (10.0.5500.0) and your friend is using SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.50.1600.1). Please note that Report Builder 3.0 only applies to SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services. You can also obtain the prerequisite from the Report Builder 3.0 download link above. So, you can only use the Report Builder 2.0 in your current Reporting Services environment. For more information about SQL Server released Builds information, you can see: http://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.com/ If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. Regards, Mike Yin

Thank you for replies. I've solved the problem quickly, and I'll try to be detailed so Mike could see if the error was caused by something important or my clumsiness with the installations. Mike Yin, First to answer your question, I've launched Report Builder from "Start->Programs", not from the report manager. I did try the two steps you've suggested, and I did have a problem when I successfully access report builder but still cannot connect to the server. But I didn't quite understand what do you mean by launching report builder from the manager, if you mean by going to properties of the report and then click "Edit" in the "Report Definition" section, that's what I've tried with no luck. The error is the same as my initial problem: Connection failed: Unable to connect to the server that is the specified in the URL, "http://<servername>/ReportServer". Make sure that the server is running, the URL is correct, and you have permission to use the server. Also, reinstalling Report Builder 3 with the link Mike gave in his reply didn't work out. MMilligan, You've suggested to uninstall Server and both builders. My colleague had only report server installed so I've asked him set it up like mine was and to try to install only Report Builder 3 with the link Mike gave in his reply, and that worked! I've noticed by the theme that he might have had a different version of reporting manager (his theme was light blue, mine was yellow). We compared versions, mine was 10.0.5500.0 , but he had a version 10.50.1600.1 . Do you think that the version is the issue? Again, thank you very much for the replies!

Thank you Mike Yin, So the issue is that I was clumsy with the installations, I perceived my installation of SQL Server 2008 as a R2 just because my reporting services configuration manager says R2. I've installed reporting services long after the SQL server and I might have used a different installation for that. Kind regards, Goran
