Report Builder 2.0 No Authentication Dialog
We have a Reporting Services Solution that we have opened up to our customer base. None of our customer base will ever be within the same domain as the Reporting Server. Some of our customers are able to use Report Builder 2.0 to connect to SQL Server 2008, others however are able to download Report Builder and then get the place where the Authentication Dialog should be displayed and they either get nothing at all or they get a 401 Unauthorised, without entering their supplied credentials. This happens to people on first install that have never attempted to input their credentials. The latest issue that has landed on my desk is from a client that is behind an ISA proxy. The users are able to use their credentials from outside their Proxy on home computers but inside their office this error occurs in every situation. Can anyone let me know if there are specific policies that will need to be set up on ISA or if there are any other specific issue I need to rectify. Paul

Hi Paul, From your problem description, the users within the same domain as reporting server can't access report server, and the error occurs wth 401 Unauthorised message. If yes, it should be permission issue. Please logon report manager to make sure the users have been granted proper permission to access report server. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa337491.aspx on setting Permissions in Reporting Services. If the issue persists, please provide more details to describe your reporting environment. thanks, Jerry

In my original description I wrote, "None of our customer base will ever be within the same domain as the Reporting Server" and "Can anyone let me know if there are specific policies that will need to be set up on ISA or if there are any other specific issue I need to rectify." I found out from the IT Department of a customer they needed to add a rule in one of their policies on their ISA proxy that, "Will not challenge requests to the address for authentication." This was the answer to issue. All requests from Report Builder 2 through the ISA proxy Server to SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services where being blocked because of they all required authentication and therefore the Report Server was trying to send the client machine Logon User details to the server for authentication.
