Report Builder- Shared Datasource- Authentication popup
Environment: SharePoint 2010 + Reporting Services 2008 R2 (Integrated) We have the Shared Data sources stored in the SharePoint doc lib, with the stored credential option. When we execute the report in the browser it works. But, when we open the report in the report builder tool and try use a data source, the authentication window popups every time. The user id is same as the one we supplied in the Shared data source stored credential and it expects the password. We expect the stored credentials passed and authenticate the user request. Any idea on this? Thanks, Jey--Jey

Hi Jey, We will receive the Enter Data Source Credentials dialog box in Report Builder when the data source is configure to prompt for credentials or uses stored credentials and the password is not retrieved from the server. The Credentials that we enter in this dialog box are not stored on the report server and are not available for use by other users. Report Builder caches the credentials during the report editing session so that we do not need to enter them every time we run the query or preview the report. From the Specifying Credentials in Report Builder 3.0 article, we can see that: For shared data sources, use the Save password with connection option to save the credentials locally with your user settings on your computer. Report Builder uses the saved credentials every time a connection is made to the corresponding external data source. However, based on my test, we still need to enter the credentials each time we restart the Report Builder after checking the save password option. So, I am afraid there is no work around currently. Thanks Mike for your reply. Apologies for the delay in response. "We understood that this functionality is by design of the Report Builder product." Observation: Once we SAVE the password locally, the RB tool did not ask for the passwork for the second time (after we check the option, 'save password with connection' in the credential popup window). This is just local for the PC/ User. For other users, the popup still appears and request for the credentials. So, we are planning to implement the option of create a user credential for Report Development and grant the READ only security in the respective source system and share with the users work on Report Development. Question: In our older production environment (MOSS 2007+SSRS 2008), we never received this popup window at all. We are not sure the settings applied for this. If someone know how to by-pass this default bahaviour, please let us know. Thanks, Jey --Jey
