Reordering report columns
Hello, I can't seem to find a way to rearrange the order of the report columns in the RS 2008's designer. Only workaround I see is deleting and recreating them at the proper place. Is this by design or am I missing something? I did search the forums and the web. Thanks, Luís

I think it's by design. I had the same question before but could not figure out how to do it. You can drag and drop dataset fields into a table OR you can use top-right icon to change dataset fields. Note the behaviors for drag and drop dataset fields into Table or Matrix is also a bit different. Hope this helps! Thanks, Michael Mei

Ugh, nasty. Yeah, dragging the fields is useful, but rearranging the order seemed such an obviously basic feature. I'm just starting, and this doesn't give me the right feeling... the product seems unpolished already... Well, let's hope I'm mistaken. Thanks! Luís

Hi Luis, If I understand you correctly, you want to rearrange the order of the report columns in RS2008's designer while designing the report, actually there is no need for you to drag the datafields from the dataset to the report columns just like RS2005, In RS2008, just move the mouse on the textbox, you will see a small rectangle on the top-right of the textbox as Michael.Mei mentioned, then select the datafield you want. If you don't want to keep this datafield, you could also select it again rather than deleting it and draging the datafield from the dataset to the new column. Hope this make sense J Have a nice day! Hello Challen What you are saying is to select appropriate datafield using the small rectangle in column. That will not work for real life projects. Every column of my report has lot of formatting and customized visibility expressions per column. Now for a requirement change i need to reoder some 25 columns in 4 reports. There is simply no way in SSRS 2008 Designer to reorder columns. Cannot copy-paste,cut-paste or drag columns. I have to spend days now just to delete and recreate all of them at required position. God forbids if business needs reordering again, again its days of work.

I agree there seems to be no way to move an actual column. However this workaround will save time versus deleting columns and re-adding from scratch: 1) Insert (new) destination column where desired 2) Copy all fields in source (old) column, select Cut from edit menu 3) Click in the first row of the destination column, select Paste from the edit menu 4) Delete the source column I cannot confirm if that will preserve everything from the source column but it should save you some time.
