Remote tools FROM Windows7 not working
My company is in the beta phase of rolling out windows 7. I have run into an issue where I cannot shadow any machine from a windows 7 pc. When I choose “start remote tools”, I get the pop up that states “contacting remote control agent on client”, then “Starting Remote Control session”. Nothing happens after that. No error popup, no way to exit the failed session other than task manager. Shadowing from XP machines works fine. I can even shadow the windows7 machine that cannot initiate shadowing. This has occurred on each of the windows7 test machines we have. I have confirmed it is NOT a firewall issue. The firewall logs are clean, and these machines have the same firewall policy as the XP machines. One thing worth noting is that we are using the NIST standards for windows 7, which I have had to modify to get other items to work in our environment. It is possible there is something in that configuration causing the issue. http://usgcb.nist.gov/usgcb_content.html I have tried this with both user level and admin level permissions, same result. The remotetools.log states: Viewer disconnected with reason:2308, extended info:0 RemoteTools 9/30/2010 9:27:31 AM 8324 (0x2084) Sent status message client (REDACTED) RemoteTools 9/30/2010 9:27:31 AM 3496 (0x0DA8) Any help would be appreciated.

Got it figured out. It was indeed a seeting from the NIST GPO's. System cryptography: Use FIPS compliant algorithms for encryption, hashing, and signing was enabled. From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811833: remote desktop connections to Windows XP computers fail when you enable this option on either the client or the server. I changed the setting in the GPO to disabled, and was able to get remote tools to work again.
