Remote Assistance error
Hello All,I have SCE2007 installed and running. I can ping workstations, Remote Desktop to the XP and Vista workstations just fine. If I try to use Remote Assistance, I get this error:'A program could not start. Please try again.'Has anyone seen this error, and if so, is this fixable? Most computers are running XP, about half with SP1 and half with SP2.Any info would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Is it possible that you have Remote Assistance disabled by a GPO on your network? Check Administrative Tools > Services on your server and make sure that Remote Access Auto Connection Manager, Remote Access Connection Manager and Remote Desktop Help Session Manager are not set to Disabled. Tim

Hi mduke5150, Besides Tims inputs, I would like to share a KB article related to this scenario with you, here it is: If the Solicited Remote Assistance policy is disabled, you cannot offer assistance to a Novice computerhttp://support.microsoft.com//kb/826088 To enable Solicited Remote Assistance policy in group policy, please following the steps: 1. Open your group policy editor on your DC, edit the right GPO you want to use. 2. Click on the Computer Configuration icon to expand the available options. Expand the Administrative Templates icon. 3. Expand the System icon. 4. Expand the Remote Assistance icon. Two options will be available: Solicited Remote Assistance and Offer Remote Assistance. Double click Solicited Remote Assistance. 5. Change the setting from "Not Configured" or "Disabled" to "Enabled". You may wish to modify the settings for "Permit remote control of this Computer, Maximum ticket time (hours), and Select the method for sending e-mail invitations. Make the settings appropriate for your environment. Click OK. 6. Close Group Policy Object Editor. 7. Ensure that group policy is refreshed. To do so, click Start, Run, and type "Gpupdate" (without the quotes). This should ensure that the policy setting is applied. 8. Test the connection. Hope this helps. Thanks.-----------------------------Sincerely,Guozhen WangMicrosoft Online Community Support

I have also had this issue and tried everything else. The one thing that seemed to fix our problem was answered in this post:http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1155601391Which explained that the RPC service used to run as Local System under SP1 and was changed to Network Service under SP2. Changing it back to Local System also corrected our error. But I think this might be a bit drastic and we are still looking into the security implications of making such a change. The better answer would be to grant Network Service rights to do what is needed, but we are not sure at this time what exactly that is. Anyone else who knows what item/items are needed please help.
