RemoteFX on Windows 10

Hello.  I am trying to see how video graphics look in Windows 10 using RemoteFX, but am running into issues.

I have the Hyper-V role installed on Server 2012 R2 with RemoteFX enabled.  I'm running Windows 10 x64 as a guest.  If i add the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter to that VM and start it up I can see it start to load windows, but then get a black screen.  This isn't just with the Hyper-V console window as i've heard is expected.  I also can't ping the system, remote into it with powershell, or RDP into it.  If i remove RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter and start it up it then boots up fine and ping, RDP, etc work.  So it seems like adding that adapter causes the system to lock up and not complete boot.

Is this expected with Windows 10 on a 2012 R2 Server?  Do i need to use Server 2016 Tech Preview for this to work?  I haven't found updated documentation showing it as required.

My next test will be to try on a Windows 8.1 VM which certainly should work, but just curious if anyone knows more about this.

Thanks

I am running into the EXACT same issue you are.  It was working fine on Windows 8.1 Enterprise but I get the black screen right before it is about to hit the desktop

Yep,  Win 8.1 worked fine then I tried it last night.  so it's only an issue with Win 10. Would be good to know if we need to wait for Server 2016 or if there will be a bug fix. My MS reps haven't been able to find an answer yet

Hi,

Exactly the same thing here.

Tried to update "live" from running VM and the screen goes black during the installation.

Problem with the support of DirectX 12 in RemoteFX ?

Keep us updated.

Hi Jason,

As far as I know, what you are seeing is expected, Windows 10 as VDI virtual desktops can only function smoothly on a Windows Server 2016 Virtualization Host.

Here is a related blog below for you:

Hello all,

We are experiencing the exact same issues with Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows server 2012 R2. Once the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter is added to the VM and started the Virtual Machine Connection just shows a black screen and we cannot Remote Desktop into the VM, but it is pingable.

Furthermore, we have installed a Windows Server Technical Preview 2 server and started testing. RemoteFX sort of works, but when running graphically demanding applications the video driver crashes and restarts in the Windows 10 Enterprise VM and sometimes even crashes so badly that the RD session shows a black screen and the VM has to be hard reset.

If anyone has concrete proof that Microsoft doesn't support RemoteFX for Windows 10 Enterprise on Windows server 2012 R2, please share it. And if anyone has any information about a patch for this also please share it.

I just cannot imagine that Microsoft wouldn't support this configuration.

I hope that someone will prove me wrong.

Agreed!  An official answer would be great.  Why would Windows 10 not be supported??
