Recovering Bare Metal backup to different VM or different Physical Machine?

Good Day everybody here,

How are you all?

I have a very simple question, suppose I will use the Windows Server Backup tool to backup my server as Bare Metal backup (either VM or physical server, which works as DC, DNS, Web..or any), now my question: can I restore this backup to different physical machine or VM??

Thanks
Best Regards

Hi

If you have a successfull backup(include bare metal),you can restore from this backup with another physical or vm.

Hi Abu,

You can restore it to another VM or physical server.

However as device drivers are all backed up, you may encounter issues like BSOD when boot up the new VM or physical server. Thus we always recommend to restore to the original computer or a computer with same hardware devices.

Hi,

If a BSOD is caused by a driver, we can boot into Safe Mode to remove drivers. Also we can run DISM there.

As you said VMs should have identical "hardware" so backup a VM and restore to another one generally works. Also we have specific steps to "backup VMs on Hyper-V host", so we do not need to do backup inside VMs.
