Recover Files - DFS Deleted

Hi,

Someone in our office ran an incorrect robocopy command which ended up in alot of information being deleted from a DFS.

The changes were made on the source folder which was not up to date with the destination folder so I assume all our missing files and folders are hiding in the Staging folder. I guess first is, is this assumption correct.

Assuming that is correct how can I got about trying to get these files and folders. Unfortunately our Backup to Tape and Previous either have not worked or were too old to capture the changes I need. I cant seem to find what I need in the Conflict and Deleted folder etc etc.

We are running Server 2008.

Hi Zac,

Above all, I would like to confirm if there is a DFS replication group configged - if so, we may able to get files back.

From your description, files are not replicated to destination folder. I assume a /mir or a /move is performed. Please noticed that this action may not involve DFS as it is directly deleted by Robocopy. Also staging folder is size limited so even if files are moved to staging folder, some of them may already be deleted.

Now please check the conflictanddeleted folder. See if any file is inside - there is a script which could help restore files inside conflictanddeleted folder to original location. So the question is whether or not these files are there.

Hi Shaon,

Replication is configured.

Have already checked the conflictanddeleted and what we need isnt in there. Neither in the Deleted, Preexisting or Installing. Only folder with files in it is the Staging folder in the DFSRPrivate location.

Hi Zac,

As replication is configged, whether the changes already replicated to the other server?

If not, stop replication, set the other server as primary should able to replicate files back.

There is no tool which could help restoring files from staging folder. If changes are already replicated, you may not able to get files back if there is no backup available.

Files in staging folder is generally compressed. You may not able to restore files from there.
