Reconfigure Workflow Manager in the live environment

Hi All,

We have an issue with Workflow manager in our live SharePoint 2013 environment. The workflow manager was working fine 1 month back and nearly same time we expanded our farm by adding additional servers. Users keep getting the following errors as follows:

1.
In SharePoint Designer 2013: Error while Publishing SharePoint Workflow 2013. Errors were found when compiling the workflow. The workflow files were saved but cannot be run. System.ServiceModel.ProtocolException: The content type text/html; charset=utf-8 of the response message does not match the content type of the binding (application/soap+xml; charset=utf-8). If using a custom encoder, be sure that the IsContentTypeSupported method is implemented properly. The first 1024 bytes of the response were: '<!DOCTYPE html>

<html>

  <head>

<title>Runtime Error</title> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width" /> <style>

2.
In Existing workflow, users are getting the following error custom workflows Internal status is SUSPENDED and have the follows status: Requestorid: <<GUID>> Details: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the workflow instance. Exception Details: System.ApplicationException: HTTP 500 The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error. We have followed all the troubleshooting steps and results were positive

After 3 weeks of troubleshooting, we are thinking reconfigure the workflow manager from the scratch. Users are concerned that their SharePoint 2010 workflows might be lost if reconfigure the workflow manager.  Currently they are not using SharePoint 2013 workflow manager.
Q: Does SharePoint 2010 workflows has any dependency on Workflow Manager and if the reconfigure the workflow manager?
Q: After reconfigure the workflow manager will SharePoint 2010 workflows still work?

Q:
What considerations should be consider in the context if reconfigure the workflow manager.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Sandy,

#1. SharePoint 2010 workflow platform has no dependency on Workflow Manager. And without workflow manager, SharePoint 2010 workflow works successfully.

#2. After configuring Workflow Manager, the 2010 workflows can still work in SharePoint 2013. The workflows will not be affected by the workflow manager.

#3. Before reconfiguring workflow manager, I recommend to do the steps as the link below to uninstall workflow manager and then reconfigure the workflow manager:

Thank you Victoria.

In our live environment,for workflow management site has self-certificate which is WorkflowOutbound certificate and its listed in Central Administration >> Security >> Manage Trust as shown:

Q: How
WorkflowOutbound  is certificate created?
Q: Is it created while configuring workflow manager?

Hi Sandy,

#1. The certificate for workflow manager is created from Workflow Management Site in IIS.

You can check the link below about how to export the certificate from Workflow Manager:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/JJ658589.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

#2. The certificate is not created when configuring workflow manager, you need to export it yourself.

Best regards,

Victoria
