Recommended process for upgrading to all the latest SCCM 2012 components

Hi guys,

I've got a SCCM 2012 SP1 CU4 server running on Windows 2008 R2.  I'd like to upgrade to all the latest updates.  From what I can tell that would be:

 - SCCM 2012 SP2 / Upgrade SCCM 2012 SP2 to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1

 - Cumulative Update 1 for System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager SP1 and System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP2

 - Windows ADK 10

I understand that to upgrade to SCCM 2012 SP2 I need to install the Windows ADK 8.1.  Can I just skip that step and jump right to the Windows ADK 10?

If that's the case then I would assume the steps would be:

1. Uninstall the Windows ADK 8.0 from my SCCM 2012 server

2. Install the Windows ADK 10 on my SCCM 2012 server

3. Apply SCCM 2012 SP2 - reboot

4. Run SC2012_R2_SP1_Configmgr.exe to upgrade my SCCM 2012 SP2 server to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1

5. Apply Cumulative Update 1 for System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager SP1 and System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP2

All done :)

Does this sound reasonable?

Thanks in advance.

No, R2 SP1 and SP2 require the ADK for Win 8.1 at R2 SP1/SP2 installation time. Thus you can't remove the ADK for WIn 8.1 and install the ADK for Win 10 until after you upgrade to R2 SP1/SP2.

Also note that you may not be entitled to R2; R2 is not a free addition. You must have purchased ConfigMgr 2012 with R2 or must have software assurance on ConfigMgr to be entitled to it.

Hi,

Ok got it.

So it sounds like I should remove the ADK for WIn 8.0, install the ADK for WIn 8.1 and then upgrade to SCCM 2012 SP2 then Upgrade SCCM 2012 SP2 to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1.

Then, should I apply the CU1 for SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 before or after I upgrade to the ADK for Win 10?

And I have a license for SCCM 2012 R2

Thanks

Nick

The CU doesn't check on the ADK version so it doesn't really matter.

Note that once you install the ADK for Win 10 you will lose the ability to modify your WinPE 4.0 based boot images and only be able to modify WinPE 10 boot image (actually once you install the Win ADK 8.1 you will lose that ability and only be able to modify WinPE 5.0 based boot images). You can still use these down level boot images, you just can't modify them in the ConfigMgr console.

Ok got it thanks.  I don't use any of the boot images so I'm not to worried about that.

I don't use any of the boot images
What does that mean? Don't you do OSD at all?

No we don't do any OSD. SCCM is used primarily for deploying software and updates and SCEP

Then the ADK doesn't matter as that's its purpose in life (as far as ConfigMgr goes).

I went thru the update from SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3 to 2012 SP2 and then to 2012 R2 SP1 and wanted to pass on the steps I followed in case anyone else does this. 1. Update registry key for HKLM\Software\CCMSetup\LastSuccessfulInstallParams - Update LastSuccessfulInstallParams entry and replace current value with: "/runservice" "/UpgradePackageVersion:4" "CCMHTTPPORT=80" "CCMHTTPSPORT=443" "CCMFIRSTCERT=1" "/mp:http://topanga.kcicorp.com" SMSSITECODE="P01" 2. Remove CU3 deployment packages from SCCM via Software Library\Application Management\Packages\Configuration Manager Updates 3. Remove Device collections for CU3 4. Clean up CU3 files on D: drive D:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\hotfix\KB2882125 D: \Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\hotfix\KB2907566 D:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Client\configmgr2012ac-sp1-kb2882125-x64.msp 5. Remove 8.0 ADK 6. Restart 7. Download and install 8.1 ADK 8. Clean up ccmsetup files and folders in C:\windows\ccmsetup remove all files 9. In SCCM manager document and then Disable the site maintenance tasks Backup Site Server, Delete Aged Client Operations and Delete Aged Discovery Data on SCCM ConfigMgr sites. 10. Install SP2 - monitor setup log 11. Restart check CCM Client setup - may need to restart twice Monitor ccmsetup.log file for errors 12. After ccmsetup and ccmexec are stable check site summary status and service summary status and SCCM check versions 13. Apply fix to reporting services mofcomp.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Shared\sqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof" to register WMI class for SQL 14. Run SC2012_R2_SP1_Configmgr.exe to upgrade my SCCM 2012 SP2 server to SCCM 2012 R2 SP1 check version 15. Manually run scheduled job in Task Scheduler to update SCCM client 16. Uninstall 8.1 ADK 17. Install Windows 10 ADK
