ReDeploy Document Library
Hello, We are looking at deploying Sharepoint, and have a situation which we need some help with. Basically the situation is we will have a document library that a specific customer will have access to. This document library will be deployed from a template. There will be many of these document libraries for individual customers. Occasionally we will need to update some of these documents. What is the easiest way to re-deploy the document library from an updated template? Thanks, Daniel

Before I answer, can you clairify your need to update some of the documents - do you mean singly, after the customer already has the library, or in the "master" template? The basic solution is to create a new library and customize it as you like, views, columns, etc. You can also add "starter documents" to the library. When you're done, in Libbrary Settings choose 'Save this library as a template', and make sure you select the checkbox option to "include content". This means your pre-seeded documents will be included in the template. [If you have more than 19.8MB of content there's an additional step]. Once you've done this, Sharepoint automatically registers the template in the list gallery for that site collection - meaning you can create new libraries anywhere in the site collection, with different permissions and locations, and your new library will derive its settings from the new template. It's a good reply but I think it might have shot over the target. I suspect the poster knows all about Save List as Template and instead is asking how best to update a template when documents contained in it are updated. The answer is that the only way is to create a new template that contains the updated documents. i.e. update the documents in a document library created from the original template; save the revised version of the document library as a (new) template; use the revised template. There are no short cuts (which is what the original poster probably - in my view - was asking). 2010 Books: SPF 2010; SPS 2010; SPD 2010; InfoPath 2010; Workflow etc. 2007 Books: WSS 3.0; MOSS 2007; SPD 2007; InfoPath 2007; PerformancePoint; SSRS; Workflow Both lists also include books in French; German; Spanish with even more languages in the 2007 list.

Thanksfor the replies Chris and Mike. Apologies for teh delay - been very hectic The answer is that the only way is to create a new template that contains the updated documents. I think this answers my question. To summarise, what you are saying is that after i have created a document library from a template - the only way to update that library with any new documents will be to delete the original library and create a new one from the new template? This this correect? Also, is there any way to tell what documents have been modified or added since a document library has been deployed from a template? Thanks, Daniel
