Re-assigning a document ID to a different document?
Didn't see any threads for this question. I'm guessing it's not possible through the interface and we probably don't want to mess with the DB... but... We have instances in which users are changing documents from MS Word to PDFs that they're posting to the Sharepoint document library. This, of course, breaks the links that already exist to the older MS Word documents (links on the intranet for example). So now we have to go back and re-point all of those links to the new document ID. In a perfect world, it'd be great to delete the original MS Word file and assign its ID to the new version that is in PDF format through the "edit properties" interface. Anyone have any comments?

> Anyone have any comments? 1. Utopian to think that users' stupity can be easily fixed except by issuing instructions that Word files are not to be changed to PDF format (and even then if they are in the file structure now, moving them to a doc lib will change the address anyway so you old links to the network drives still won't work.) 2. The question doesn't seem to have anything to do with SharePoint. It's a problem with - as I understand it - links to certain documents. Whether these are in a doc lib or not doesn't change the problem that a link to XXX.doc in a particular location (Doc lib or file system) will not find a XXX.pdf file in the same location. 3. What about internal links ? If you have those in those Word now PDF documents that's an additional level of complexity. P.S. Don't amend the database directly. Result possibly unstable system and no help available from MS to fix it. It's only relevant to the sharepoint situation in that it would be fantastic if document IDs were editable / movable so that even if you do change a document's "type" you'll still be able to get users to the correct information without worrying about where all those links were all over many external sources. I certainly wouldn't edit the DB for this =D It's easier to just change the links to the new document type.
