Random annoying Authentication Pop up in SharePoint and Office 2007
My SharePoint users are seeing a pop up while working with Microsoft Office 2007 Applications (Word, Excel and Outlook). This pop-up comes at different times especially after they start these applications. They click cancel to exit the request for authentication to a SharePoint site and it comes back after they click cancel several times then it stops. Its quite annoying can anyone help?

Hi WebWox, What type of authentication are you using? Also client integration is enabled, right? Have you tried adding the site URL in the browser's 'trusted sites'? See the following links for details. http://paulliebrand.com/2008/04/02/sharepoint-consistently-prompting-for-user-credentials/ http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointadmin/thread/45feb132-c304-4521-8b79-42236a829aab Hope this helps! If the logon prompt is on top the windows with office application, then you should look in your setteings for Office, uner Trust Settings. If the logon prompt is on the windows with IE, then issue is in the IE. Remember when opening a Office Document this is done by Office Extended Discovery Protocol and NOT the HTTP, so if you have proxy, firewall in front of your SharePoint you can have a configuration issue. When the office document is open, this is done in a new session, so any of the above issue will have the impact that the user is not getting authenticated - hence the logon prompt.

Do you have any gateway (UAG, etc) between SharePoint and your client office application? UAG has a known issue similar to your situation. If you allow rich clients to authenticate directly with the SharePoint sites authentication server or if you allow MSOFBA, when end users attempt to access files in their client application, the files may not open. This can occur when they attempt to access files using the Open dialog and in File name they enter the full path of the file (including the file name). In this case they may receive multiple credential requests and the file may not open. Instead, users should enter only the path of the file they want to open, press ENTER, and then in the file list, they should double-click the file.

Is it for particular Library or for all site collection? If its for particular library and that library permission is broke from the root and users are added to the folder level permission then those users need to be added as read permission on library root level.Aniket

The authentication is NTLM and Client integration is enabled. I have added the site URL in the browser trusted sites and I have read the following links. No joy yet, they have not fixed the issue.

This issue is not related to the logon prompt in the applications, because if i remove the user from the SharePoint group of the Site Collection that is causing the prompt. The issue disappears, but I dont want to remove them from the group. Can you help?

Theres no UAG, this is our local intranet. We use AD to do DNS.
