RS2005 and VS2010 Compatibility
Hello. We have been working with Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005, and Reporting Services 2005 for a long time now. We have a Visual Studio 2005 solution that contains a Reporting Services 2005 .rptproj project and RDLs. And, of course, we're using SQL Server 2005. We now have Visual Studio 2010 Premium installed on our development machines. However, our old Visual Studio 2005/Reporting Services 2005 project does not work in Visual Studio 2010. We get some error saying that the .rptproj project type is not supported. We've done some research on this topic and found a lot of people with similar issues. But, we couldn't get an understanding of exactly what we need to do and what our options are. We are keeping SQL Server 2005 (for now) and we would like to use Visual Studio 2010 for our Reporting Services project and RDL development. So, here are a few questions: What are our options for this scenario? Do we have to continue to support Visual Studio 2005 on each developer machine for the Reporting Services work, while also having Visual Studio 2010 installed for our "normal" c# work? Is there any way to upgrade our existing Visual Studio 2005 .rptproj and RDLs to be usable in Visual Studio 2010? Any other info for us???? Thanks!

As of now VS 2010 does not support SSRS project. Two options I can see are (1) Retaining the VS 2005 for RDL development (2) I have not tried this but feel Report Builder 2 or 3 should support SSRS 2005.

Suresh is correct regarding #1. However, Report Builder 2 or 3 cannot be used with Reporting Services 2005. Thanks, RobertRobert Bruckner http://blogs.msdn.com/robertbruckner This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Thanks for the replies. It's starting to make a little more sense, but another question or two... Sorry for my ignorance, but what is Report Builder 2 or 3? Also, let's say we wanted to go to SQL Server 2008, would we still have to use VS 2005 for our reports project? Can we use VS 2005 with SQL Server 2008 (SSRS 2008)? Or would we [somehow] migrate our VS 2005 RDLs to Report Builder? Or???? Thanks!

Yes, As your Report Server seems to be SSRS 2005. You have to keep the Visual studio 2005 installtion on each developer machine. For future , you can upgrade both SQl server and SSRS to 2008R2 version. SSRS 2008 R2 Has better functionality and good on performance. But still with that you have to Keep both Bids 2008 and Visual Studio 2010 because VS2010 does not have BI templates.~~ Mark it as Answer if you find it correct~~
