Question on Adding Gateway Server into Maintenance Mode
Hi, We have set all of our agents to Primary and Failover gateways. During monthly security updates, we're adding the GWs into MM one at a time. My question is that eventhough we have primary and secondary, the agents are trying to communicate through the Primary server whether it's in Maintenance Mode are not right. It will failover when the Primary server is not avialble for them right. I am thinking, the agents will queue all the ale alerts in the primary server and then reach out to Management Server once the Priamry is out of Maintenance Mode. Please let me your thoughts and experiences on this. Regards, Fidelis

understand maintenance mode http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2704170 scom 2012 put management server into maintenace mode http://windowspowered.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/management-server-maintenance-mode-in-scom-2012/ So putting the primary and secondary gateway server into maintenace mode will stop all workflows, monitors and rules on the gateway servers. Agents will try to communicate with primary gateway and then failover when primary server is not available. If both servers is unavailable, agents data is stored into local database and will send back to management server once it online. Roger

Thanks Roger. I can understand the agent will communicate the fail over GW when the primary is not available. I am trying to understand the MM of the primary and complete server are same for the agent. That means, if the Priamry is in MM, the agent will fail over to failover GW? - Fidelis

Thanks for your quick reply. I went through the post. We're still having SCOM 2007 R2. But the above post was talking about 2012 MM concept. Coming back to my orginal question, in SCOM 2007 R2 if primary is in MM, the agents will fail over to secondary GW? Fidelis

Issue with putting scom 2007 R2 root management server into maintenace mode: http://blogs.technet.com/b/smsandmom/archive/2007/12/06/opsmgr-2007-object-still-shows-to-be-in-maintenance-mode-after-the-window-has-expired.aspx Please be careful, in scom 2007 R2 design rms plays an important role in scom monitoring , which update alert and performance data which collect from client and write to database. Put RMS into maintenace mode will stop all workflow and as a result all performance data and alert will not generate and also the Object still shows to be in Maintenance Mode after the maintenace window has expired.
