Question about crawling

I am using Sharepoint 2013 Foundation.

I would like to understand more about crawling. May I know the difference between the different types of crawling below?

  • Incremental crawling
  • Reset and then full crawling
  • No reset and then full crawling
  • Incremental crawling

Besides, if I have just uploaded a document to my Sharepoint site, is incremental crawling enough for including this document to index for searching, or should full crawling be run?

On the contrary, if I have removed a document from my Sharepoint site, is incremental crawling enough for removing this document from index, or should full crawling be run?

Thanks a lot for advice!

> if I have just uploaded a document to my Sharepoint site, is incremental crawling enough for including this document to index for searching

Yes. As long as the library or site is not configured to not be crawled. (in which case it would be skipped in all crawl types.)

> if I have removed a document from my Sharepoint site, is incremental crawling enough for removing this document from index

Yes.

  • Incremental crawling

Incremental looks for new, changed or deleted items and updates the index. This is a reasonably fast process. If the crawl schedule is once an hour, then new content should show up in searches in an hour or less.

  • Reset and then full crawling

Resetting the index will delete:

All primary index content such as keywords and metadata.
  Analytics features:
     - Raising or demoting items in search results based on which search results users have clicked.
     - Displaying the number of times a search result has been viewed.

  • No reset and then full crawling

This will discard the index, but keep the analytics info. This is typically a very long running process. Depending on the size of the content, days.
