Push client installation without extending AD schema
Hi, We have installed a SCCM 2007 R3 site system with the following roles: MP, DP, SUP, SLP, FSP. Mixed Mode. AD System Discovery enabled. Boundaries created based on IP Subnet. AD Schema not extended. Client machines are correctly discovered and SCCM shows the Site Code and Assigned:yes No errors in Site Status. However, neither push nor manual client installation work. Some of the clients have the SCCM applet in control panel and some others do not. In those clients that have the SCCM applet, the assigned site code is blank. Any attempt to manually type the Site Code and apply changes fails. I've been the last 3 days trying to address this issue without success and I'm getting very frustrated. Thanks and regards Jorge Q

Is there a SLP set up in your environment? Is it up an running? Have you added a WINS entry that points to the SLP? What's in LocationServices.log and ClientLocation.log on the clients?Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

Thanks for the answer, Torsten. The SLP role is installed but there is no WINS in the enviroment. ClientLocation.log: Unable to verify the sitecode 'XXX', AD schema is not extended or SLP is not present. Cannot continue site assignment. LocationServices.log: Processing pending site assignment Assigning to site 'XXX' Verifying site Version for <XXX> Failed to retrieve version for the site 'XXX' Attempting to retrieve SLPs from AD Failed to resolve 'SMS_SLP' to IP address from WINS Failed to resolve SLP from WINS, is it published Unable to get the list of SLPs Failed to get site version from AD and SLP Won't send a client assignment fallback status point message because the last assignment error matches this one Definitively, it seems that there is a problem collecting information about the Site. This is normal when it's trying to get the info from AD since the schema wasn't extended but, regarding the SLP it's not as clear for me as long as I added the SLP information in the "Client Installation properties". Besides, when trying to manually install the client, I also add the SLP parameter. Is it mandatory to have either AD schema extended or SLP published in WINS? Adding SLP information in the client installation is not enaugh? Thanks and regards Jorge Q

This is the command line: sccmsetup.exe /MP:SSCMserver SMSSITECODE=XXX FSP=SSCMserver SMSSLP=SSCMserver DNSSUFFIX=domain.com There is no WINS in the enviroment. Thanks and regardsJorge Q

I managed to make it work eventually by manually installing the client using the command line above. It took a long time to download the files but, once done, either the installation and Site assignation were correct. However, I wonder why pushing installation does not work even though these same parameters are typed in the Client Push Installation properties. Besides, is there any way to avoid bits for manual client deployments? Jorge Q

To work Client Push without extending schema.. you need to publish MP & SLP records in WINS or DNS.... Read these links will give you full details... Configuration Manager and Service Location (Site Information and Management Points) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632435.aspx How to Manually Add Configuration Manager Site Information to WINS http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632567.aspx How to Configure Configuration Manager Clients to Find their Management Point using DNS Publishing http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb633030.aspx How to Manually Publish the Default Management Point to DNS http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632936.aspx try the above it should resolve the issue.. it is not mandatory as extending the schema...but it is recommended for these benefits... http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb694066.aspx for every option you have a workaround in the link..... There is no WINS in the network so publishing SLP info in WINS is not an option. Publication of MP in DNS was set from the begining but, aparently, is not enough. This is the line added in Client Push Installation Properties: SMSSITECODE=XXX FSP=SSCMserver SMSSLP=SSCMserver SMSMP=SCCMserver DNSSUFFIX=domain.com source:\\SCCMserver\SMS_XXX\Client When trying to push the client, I receive an error in the ccmsetup.log stating: Invalid argument source:\\SCCMserver\SMS_XXX\Client Invalid ccmsetup command line: c:Windows\ccmsetup\ccmsetup.exeJorge Q
