Publishing site discrepancies for 'site assets'

I have noticed discrepancies for publishing sites when creating sub sites. The issue I have noticed is that randomly some of the sub sites have a 'site assets' library and others don't. The sites work correctly, as I don't require the site assets library in the sub sites anyway.

They all have the 'SharePoint Server Publishing' feature activated. So I don't see what the difference is between the sub sites. This has happened on multiple site collections now so seems to be a common bug with SharePoint.

Although it is not causing me a problem in at present it is still a question I'd like an answer to in case we do need to use the site assets library for each of the sub sites in the future.

Check and see whether the following site feature is enabled.
- Wiki Page Home Page

That site feature is never enabled on any sites that use the publishing portal. It is not enabled on the root site or any of the sub sites on any of the websites I have created using the publishing portal template for the site collection.

Which makes it all the more random that some of the sub sites have the 'site assets' library and some don't.

As a test I have created a brand new publishing portal site collection and created some sub sites in it. There are no customisations at all in this site. The 'Wiki Page Home Page' feature is not activated in root site or any sub sites. There is no 'Site Assets' library in any of the sites. So now I am confused about how my other sites that have branding customisation and custom web parts etc for a publishing website have a random mix of some sub sites having the 'site assets' library and some not and none of them having the Wiki page home page feature activated.

For the next test I activated the Wiki Page Home Page feature. It creates two new libraries: 'site pages', which contains two pages (Home and How to use this library); and 'site assets', which is empty.

I had a look at my existing publishing websites and it appears they all have 'sites pages' and 'site assets' in the root site. Both libraries are empty. In the sub sites some have an empty 'site assets', some don't have a 'site assets'. None have a 'site pages' library. So I don't think this relates to the Wiki Page Home Page feature. I think it is some other anomaly, as I have never activated the Wiki Page Home Page feature in any site before.

One way to create the libraries is to enable the Wiki Page Home Page feature.

Another way is to access those libraries in SharePoint Designer. SharePoint will create the libraries automatically if you try to access them in SharePoint Designer.

My issue is that I don't want to create these libraries. They have randomly been created in some publishing sub sites. I have been hiding them with SharePoint Designer to stop the confusion for users. It is a worry when software does things randomly. I can't see any reason why some of the sub sites have that library and others don't. All sub sites have been created the same way. So there should be no reason for the library to have been created.

Hi,

To remove unwanted files, content types and features and other stuffs on your publishing site template, import the package into Visual Studio "Import reusable solution package" template.

It will give you the GUI hierarchy of files and features, so you can control on what features you wanted , after choosing as your wish, package it again.

Not to forget "exclude assembly" from the project property.

If possible "deploy it on your site" and check everything works as expected.
