Proxy Management Point
Dear All,
I have a query with regards to Proxy Management Point. Proxy Management Point will cache the policies downloaded by Secondary Site clients. For what purpose they will be caching the policies. Are those policies served to Secondary Site
Clients?
I also read that the clients by default will request Primary Management Point for policy eventhough a Proxy Management Point is installed. Please clarify the same.
Regards,
Aditya.

Dear Gharbi,
I have gone thru the link. I just didn't get what the last lines mean. Can you please elaborate?
***[Proxy management points do not directly respond to client policy requests. All client policy requests are sent to the default management point at the primary site. However, proxy management points do cache policy bodies downloaded by clients.]***
I am a ble to gather what the above lines mention. But the next 2 lines are confusing.
***[If the policy body for a requested client policy has already been downloaded by a secondary site client, the policy body will be sent from the proxy management point to the secondary site client. Otherwise, the client will download the policy body from
the default management point at the primary site and the proxy management point will cache it for future client policy body requests].***
Y the policy is cached by Proxy MP. Would Proxy MP will be responding to the requests of client? But as per the above description, PMP will not receive any requests from client.
Regards,
Aditya.

This is an area that we're currently investigating for clarification, so stay tuned. Clients in the boundary of a secondary site will ask the proxy management point in that site for policies, and the proxy management point will respond to those clients.
The response contains policy assignments, which in turn contain pointers to the actual policy body to download. You can find more information about policy assignments and policy bodies here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb681077.aspx.
The documentation you're referencing was written on the understanding that the proxy management point proxies the request for policy from the client to the default management point and then returns the response. Policy assignments are never cached
at the proxy management point, but policy bodies are cached. So if other clients request the same policy body, it can be returned from cache rather than requiring another download request.
What we're clarifying is how the proxy management point gets the policy (assignments and body) - whether from the default management point (as documented) or directly from the site database (or a replica). The consensus is that it isn't from the default
management point. We will update the documentation when we have confirmation.

Hi Aditya,
the reason behind configuring Proxy MP is to reduce network traffic. It works as replica of default management point.
Generally, clients get policies downloaded from default management point which is Primary site and it keeps information stored in SCCM database. While we configure proxy MP, it stores the same policy info cached from clients and update it to default
management point.
Hope, it clears your doubt or you can do further discussions about it.
Thnx.

I too have the same question?
Will the secondary site clients contact primary site MP for any reason when there is a local PMP in the secondary site?

Yes, It will show Primary site MP to secondary site clients.
As I stated above "Generally, clients get policies downloaded from default management point which is Primary site and it keeps information stored in SCCM database. While we configure proxy MP, it stores the same policy info cached from clients
and update it to default management point. "
By default, for the first time clients will contact primary site MP and after that will store the same policy on PMP from clients and update it to DMP (Default MP).
thx.

After checking with the product group, the following clarifications have been made in this topic (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693472.aspx), which should answer your question:
.... The proxy management point retrieves client policy from the site database in the primary site or from a site database replica, which is standard behavior for management points. However, when you use a proxy management point and the site database
replica is located in the secondary site, network data associated with client policy is kept in the secondary site. For more information about using a site database replica, see
How to Configure SQL Server Site Database Replication. Because all management points cache policy bodies, network traffic to the
primary site is reduced by using a proxy management point, even when there is no site database replica in the secondary site. For more information about client policy bodies, see
About Client Policy in Configuration Manager.
There are a couple of different reasons why clients in the secondary site might still contact the default management point in the primary site though - one is for site assignment (see the note in this topic). The second is when clients cannot locate
the proxy management point from Active Directory Domain Services (for example, workgroup clients and clients from another forest). In this scenario, clients contact the default management point, which tells them about the proxy management point.
For more information, see "Example Assignment Scenarios for Configuration Manager: Secondary Sites" (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680569.aspx#BKLM_assignmentsecondary_proxy).

Hi,
You can also use the tool called policy spy to check the policy information on PMP.
You can download the tool and check the PMP policy details
