Provision central admin on another server

Hi All,

I have Sharepoint 2007 environment and it has 3 Servers (2 WFE and 1 APP) and the central admin is hosted on APP server, Somehow the APP server has crashed and not coming up. I need to move the Central admin to WFE so that the business can continue . Can someone please give me any leads ?

Just run PSConfig on the WFE server where you want Central Admin.  Tell it to keep the server in the farm, but also tell it to use that server for Central Admin.  That will provision a new Central Admin site on the WFE.

Hey Paul thanks for the reply.

Questions:

Will there be any outage ?

Will all the settings be copied over to the New central admin (AAM and other jobs info)

Do i need to kick out the corrupted server once the CA is hosted on the new server, So that a fresh install can be initiated ?

Will there be any outage ?  - PSConfig always stops the services while running and causes an IIS reset.  So there will be an outage while you run PSConfig on that WFE.  Other servers should continue to run normally.

Will all the settings be copied over to the New central admin (AAM and other jobs info) - This just creates a new CA web site.  The settings are all in the Config Database.  So unless you customized the CA site (which is uncommon) all your settings should be preserved.

Do i need to kick out the corrupted server once the CA is hosted on the new server, So that a fresh install can be initiated ? - Moving CA to the other server will not require doing anything with the old server.  But if more than CA was affected you will need to repair/replace that server.

Hi Paul,

I ran in to a issue after provision the CA to another server, Now it says page cannot be displayed .

I have made sure that the URL for new server is correct. I do not see any thing in event viewer.

You are going to need to check the ULS log in SharePoint to figure that one out.  Usually this error results from a problem with access to the content database for the site or something similar.  Just because nothing is showing in the event log doesn't mean there isn't an issue.

Hi Paul,

It is for the CA site, Do you think something related to the AAM ?

Normally there isn't really an AAM for the CA site.  Its just the name of the server and a custom port number.  Since you are moving it from an app server to a WFE server and since you have two WFE servers could the load balancer be getting in the way?

Hey Paul FInally we resolved it by following the below steps :

Unprovision the CA through stsadm

psconfig.exe -cmd adminvs -provision -port  -WindowsAuthProvider OnlyUseNTLM

Provision the CA through stsadm and finally it started working.
