Process calls for Autodiscovery
Hi, Can someone please point me to a source for what process calls OpsMgr makes when it is doing an AutoDiscovery? ie does SCOM make LDAP calls in AD and so on to discover machines? What are the specifics? I am having a rough time trying to get a Windows 2008R2 SQL2008R2 SCOMR2 box going in Prod.....Works fine in Test. But I have logging-in problems to the box, logging-off problems and then the only way to get to the box is to reboot it. Seems to occur after the box has done an AutoDiscovery and failed. As u can imagine there is not a lot of joy and good vibes happening around this. Ha!! A second box has been built and it has the same issues in the Prod domain. No problems if built in the Test domain. (BTW, manual discovery works fine in Prod when the names are typed in). I have the following paper: http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2007/12/10/how-does-computer-discovery-work-in-opsmgr-2007.aspx ) It is steps 7 & 8 that we are interested in, in the above link. The objective is to run these manually against the domain controllers and see what happens. So if someone would be so kind as to provide the Autodiscovery details, that would be helpful. thx Thankyou, John Bradshaw

Hi John, when you do a discover process, besides seeing it directly in the result in the dialog box of the discover, you have more information in the Task Status node of the Monitoring pane The discovery process will be done by the Management Server action account. The auto discovery will do an LDAP call which is the same if you do an Advanced discovery and supply the * as search parameter. Step 8 is the verification process, to see if the machine which is discovered is actually 'on'. You will need to have the ports open which are listed with step 8. This process will be done by the account you specify as the install account in the discovery wizard. Here is something quite unexpected. When doing a MANUAL discovery (which failed), the Task Status reports that the status was Success but that the agent failed to install. Does this seem a little strange? thx, JB Status: Success This task is used by the Discovery Wizard. It will not function correctly when run directly from knowledge or the actions pane.
