Problem with SharePoint logging
There is a problem in SharePoint logging. The problem description is similar to what described in this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointadmin/thread/df8deffe-fe63-445f-9c5c-02d6ba282acdAll I can see in logs is "Tracing Service lost trace events" kind of messages. As suggested in the above link, I restarted "Windows SharePoint Services Tracing" service, but it didn't help. Is there anything I need to look into? Pls help.

Hi there,I had this issue sometime back and had to restart both the Windows SharePoint Services Tracing and the Windows SharePoint Services Administration services. Also, from doing a bit of hunting about I noticed that only those who had just upgraded to SP1 had the issue. There were comments that upgrading to SP2 would solve this, unfortunately I've been unable to find any evidence of that.Hope this hepsCheersGeoff

Thanks Geoff,I tried restarting WSS Administration service, it didn't help. I even restarted the server, but no success. I'm wondering, how to resolve this issue!

was there anything updated in the eventviewer? The issue is related to wsstracing.exe . Can you try using the process explorer to see if there is anything going along with that exe. Also check in the task manager if you are able to see the exe running. Also try disabling the tracing for some time and then check to see that the above mentioned exe is not visible anywhere.... do the services restart and then enable the tracing.May be this would help...

There was no update in event viewer.I also checked process explorer. Following two were going along with wsstracing.exe: csrss.exe and services.exeWhen I disbaled tracing service, wsstracing.exe dissappeared from task manager. When I started the tracing service, it again appeared in task manager. Service restart didn't help!

Hi Suresh, I know you have tried to restart the service and it did not help for your issue. But all the cases I saw from the internet and internal were resolved by restarting the service, could you please try again following the steps? 1. Turned All logging events to information and verbose in central admin. 2. Stopped the Windows SharePoint Tracing service. 3. Stopped the SharePoint Timer Job service 4. Restarted both jobs. 5. Logging working as expected. 6. Turned logging back down from information and verbose to warning and monitorable. If it is not helpful, please help me to collect an SPSReport for further investigation. To capture SPSReports, please follow the steps: 1) Download the SPSReport tool from http://spsreport.codeplex.com/ 2) Run the SPSReport.exe on the SharePoint Server. 3) Choose option 3 (Full). 4) On your system a CAB file will be generated in the %systemroot%\SPSReports\Portal\rpt\Cab directory called %COMPUTERNAME%_SPSReports.CAB. 5) The CAB file will contain the reports generated by the SPS Reporting Tool. 6) Send the cab file to the workspace above. Hi Lambert, Thank you for the detailed information. Here are my observations: 1. Followed the initial steps given by you. It didn't help. 2. Downloaded the tool and executed SPSReport.exe on the SharePoint server 3. Interestingly, there was no file present in cab folder (C:\Windows\SPSReports\Portal\rpt\Cab). This folder was empty. I executed everything as mentioned in your post. rpt folder had some text files. But, cab folder was empty. So, I ran SPSReport.exe again and now cab folder is still empty and rpt folder is also missing those text files. Am I missing something here? Thanks, Suresh

An update: I executed SPSReport afresh. Still, cab folder is empty. But, under rpt folder I can see the following TXT files: %COMPUTERNAME%_WMIServices_a.txt %COMPUTERNAME%_system.txt %COMPUTERNAME%_PROGRESS.txt %COMPUTERNAME%_Process.txt %COMPUTERNAME%_application.txt Thanks, Suresh

Hi Lambert, There was some problem while executing stsadm command. That might have caused the problem for report also. I'll try again running the .exe and update you on the report. Thanks, Suresh
