Problem opening report solution
Something has happened and I cannot open my SQL Server 2008 reporting solutions. I am getting the following error when I click on solution: Value cannot be null. Parameter name:name If I then close the solution and open it again, I am getting no error. What is THAT?

Hi, I'm think than your client tool BIDS is not been installed correctly or you have corrupted version. Which BIDS version do you use? Thanks KumarKG, MCTS

How do I check?
December 21st, 2010 10:28pm

Hi, Open the BIDS go to Help Menu, under it their should be drop down list of things, select "SQL Server Reporting Services" which will give you production details, something like this:- "Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Designers Version 10.50.1600.1" which means above version is SQL Server 2008 R2 version. Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Designers Version 10.50.1600.1

Hi, I think so your designer is corrupted or something wrong going on, try to create new local SSRS solution and under it create sample report and see if that works if not than you have reinstall BIDS 2008 R2 version again. Thanks KumarKG, MCTS

Opening a solution (not the one recently created) in freshly restarted BIDS will trigger a popup messagebox with the following text in two lines: Value cannot be null. Parameter name:name if I say Ok it will open the project but reports will have no Report data tab. If I close the solution and then open it again, everything works fine.

Hi, After you receive the error, and hit OK button, now save your Project by performiing "Save ALL", now you clost your project and open it again. "I hope this doesn't effects you right?" Do you receive again same error? try it out. Thanks Kumar KG, MCTS

It does not matter if I save All, if I close the project and open it without restarting BIDS I am not getting error. But the error is always there when I open the project for the first time after BIDS started.

Hi, Based on the discussion above, this error might be caused by Visual Studio since the projects can be opened successfully without restarting Business Intelligence Development Studio. So, I would suggest you also ask the question in the Visual Studio Forum (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vsx/threads). It is more appropriate and you will get more feedback. Additionally, please also try to find more detailed error message after the error occurred by using Event Viewer. Generally, the error message can be found in the Application node under the Windows Logs. I am sure you are not suprised that the event log has no records about this error. Would have been too easy, wouldn't it?

Mark did you ever get to the bottom of the cause of this error as I get exactly the same thing in VS 2008 with a reports solution converted from VS 2005 to VS 2008. The first report I open in design mode causes the same error message you reported and although the report comes up in design mode, the report data tab is missing. If I close the report and reopen it, everything looks OK and there is no error message. However if I close the solution and try the same thing again, I get the same issue. On the plus side it isn't stopping me working but it's VERY annoying and I'd like to fix it if you ever got to the bottom of the cause. Regards Robert Cowan
