Problem dragging documents between document libraries in windows explorer.
Hi,
If I open the two document libraries (which are in seperate site collections but under the same web application) http://projects/sites/siteaA/Documents and
http://projects/sites/siteB/Documents
in explorer view and try to drag a document from A > B or B < A I get the following error
"Cannot move <File Name> Cannot read from the source file or disk."
If I open two document libraries in explorere view that are under different site collections and web applicaions but in the same farm e.g.
http://projects/sites/siteaA/Documents and
http://departments/sites/anothersite/Documents and drag a document between them it works fine!!
Can anyone see if they have the same issue?
My farm is running on Server 2008 Rel 2 and is patched to version 12.0.0.6504
Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,
This is a by design behavior that the design of SharePoint source code doesn't authorize to do a MOVE between sites collections under the same web application.
In different web application circumstance, it works as it use PUT WebDAV method when moving files, also SharePoint proc_RenameUrl store pro is not used.
However, when moving files between site collections under the same web application via Explorer View in Windows 7 and Vista, it tries a MOVE instead of a PUT verb.
It use proc_RenameUrl which is not designed to be used between sites collections. Windows XP should work in this scenario though.
A workaround is to copy files to the target location and then delete the items in the source.
Thanks & Regards.

Hi,
Muhammad thanks for the white paper I will have a read of it.
Lilly as you suggest performing a copy and paste works fine. A bit annoying that this is "by design" rather than a bug however at least you have given me a good workaround, well at least until we move to windows 7!!!!
Thanks Dave
