Problem configuring Sharepoint when Upgrading from WSS3 to MOSS07
Hello,We have been running Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 on Server 2003 for about 3 years now. We decided to upgrade Sharepoint Services 3.0 to Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 and today I was tasked to set it up. We are installing up on the same server that ran WSS3. It's a Stand-alone server. While installing (or rather upgrading) to MOSS 2007 (enterprise) we had a problem running "Sharepoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard". It seems to fail at step 9, "Creating Sample Data", with the error: "The IIS Web Site you have selected is in use by Sharepoint".I'm not sure what to do here. The old WSS3 site still seems to work and I have new options when I access it which tells me that the site has been upgraded to MOSS 2007. If I open the Admin Site, it gives me the generic "An error has occurred".Any ideas?Just to confirm, we were upgrading WSS3 to MOSS2007 without uninstalling WSS3. We were trying to upgrade the existing Sharepoint sites.Owner, Quilnet Solutions

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927376 the error "The IIS Web Site you have selected is in use by SharePoint" may be caused by having used Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager instead of SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration to change the settings of an IIS Web site. Since you cannot open Central Administration now, can you use PSConfig.exe command to unprovision the CA and provision it again? Please refer to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263093.aspx for commands as follows: psconfig.exe -cmd adminvs –unprovision psconfig.exe -cmd adminvs -provision -port 8080 -windowsauthprovider onlyusentlm Also, in community comments section of http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262342.aspx , Ivan point out that WSS3.0 and MOSS 2007 should be run on the same patch level.

Thank you both for your reply.I have tried both of your suggestions and none seem to have resolved the issue, however, we did find that there was some sort of conflict between other IIS sites that were created by Sharepoint 3.0 and the sample site created by MOSS 2007. For some reason MOSS did an upgrade correctly of 3.0 but it did not do an upgrade on the sample site. instead it was trying to install it. Since it was using the same URL for the sample data as another WSS3 site that already existed previously, the sample data was failing. What we ended up doing was temporarily changing the existing IIS site to another URL and re-ran the configuration wizard. It successed after this. We removed the sample data site and returned the previous site to it's original URL.Any idea why the setup was trying to use the same URL as an existing sharepoint site? And before you ask, no, none of the WSS sites were edited or configured in the IIS admin MMC or CMD-line. they are always edited in the WSS3 Central Administration.Owner, Quilnet Solutions

Did you choose Basic installation for MOSS 2007? You should choose Advanced->Complete installation. Yeah, we chose Advanced->Complete during the upgrade.Owner, Quilnet Solutions
