Previous versions of SteadyState/Shared Computer Toolkit
Can someone provide a link to the previous version of the toolkit (SCT v1.1) I cant find it anywhere. I never had any major problems with v1.1 and until the slow login issue with v2.0 is fixed Im unwilling to upgrade. Cheers

Hi Bsforfar92, As Shared Computer Toolkit has been upgraded to Windows SteadyState, the download link of SCT v1.1 has been removed from Microsoft Download Center. You can download it from the following website now: https://sftus.one.microsoft.com/ChooseTransfer.aspx?key=49026f7f-7e3c-4d69-a083-c0dd29a74357 1. Choose Receive Files from Microsoft. 2. Copy the following password to the open box and click Go. lmO!WPabcWdo 3. Click the download link to start the downloading. Note: The workspaces will be expired after 30 days. You can also send email to me at v-shshao@microsoft.com and I will send one copy of SCT v1.1 to you. As to the slow login issue, unfortunately, this is a known issue of Windows SteadyState. You can refer to the following threads: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsToolsandUtilities/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1790972&SiteID=69 http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsToolsandUtilities/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1852237&SiteID=69 We have reported this issue to our product team. If there is any update, we will post here as soon as possible. Best Regards,

As SCT was pretty much different than SteadyState i wonder why it was not kept and developed along SteadyState. What I like about SCT: - As it is using the ewf driver it is able to use HORM (Hibernate once reboot many) which SteadyState is not able to. - It can boot from Read-Only media because the EWF Partition can be on a different Harddisk. - Ewf driver has an open api, so it would even be possible to program your own app to use the ewf driver. There was a nice Handbook with information about e.g. how to set up EWF partition on a second harddisk, this information is now all gone from the shared access homepage.I think Microsoft should really consider continuing SCT in a separate application, as it is a really nice product with different goals than SteadyState. Thanks, Martin

Hi Martin, I understand the inconvenience you have encountered. Please understand that it will be a little complex for most customers when using EWF driver. Thats why we moved to VCFFltr driver technology. If you have used SteadyState, you may find that the new version is easier to install and use. With the file-based Windows Disk Protection technology, SteadyState can be installed without changing disk partitions. The unified console also lets you graphically control all your settings and options within a single interface. Except for most features in Shared Computer Toolkit, SteadyState also adds more powerful ones. For your reference, the current Windows Disk Protection also have its own API. You can refer to the following article: Description of the API for the Windows Disk Protection feature in Windows SteadyState http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;938335 Our engineers will continue working on this product. I will forward this feature request to our development team. If there is any update in the new version, we will post here soon. Have a good day. Best Regards,

Hi Bilou_Gateux, I dont have French version of SCT 1.1 either. I think SteadyState is simpler to install and use. Its also more powerful than SCT 1.1. Would you please post the problem when using SteadyState? We can discuss it together. Best Regards,

Mr. Shao, I, too, would like to roll back WSS to Shared Computer Toolkit. I've read the advertising for WSS, and I'm sure that it has many desirable features. But it doesn't work for me. Rather than arguing with you about your product, I'd prefer to just download SCT again and get on with what I'm doing. I gather from your earlier responses that you resist that idea, and insist on working through WSS issues in this forum. That's understandable, but I get the uncomfortable feeling thatMicrosoft isusing my time to debug your product instead of beta testing it yourself. However, SCT was good and it was free, so I'm willing to give you some time in exchange for getting the toolkit back. So here aremy issues: 1. WSS is destabilizing my system. I've run XP for years without a problem, but I've now started to see the "Blue Screen of Death," like the old days with NT. Unfortunately, the system crashes so fast there's no time to read the messages. 2. Although I log on as an administrator, I'm locked out of my own system when I try to do routine system maintenance with an application called System Mechanic. If I turn off WSS, it works as expected. When I investigate the rule imposed by WSS that is preventing me from using my own system, I'm told that Microsoft hasn't gotten around to writing the documentation for that one yet, but they're sure glad I asked because that lets them know what to work on in the future. 3. I would like to upgrade a couple of security applications on my system. I would like to do this using the option to Save Changes Temporarily until I'm convinced that the applications can play happily together. With WSS installed, I can't even uninstall an anti-virus application without locking up the OS. I can't remember that happening with XP. Ever. So I don't want to fix this thing, I just want to get rid of it and return to what I consider to be a really fine product. Thanks. Richard Sanders

Hi Richard, I fully understand the inconvenience you are experiencing. Please understand that before the release of SteadyState and all the other Microsoft products, we have tested as much of the software/hardware environment as we could to improve its performance and stability. However, we still cannot guarantee that SteadyState is a perfect product which works without any fault and meet every customers requirements. I am sure that other companies cannot guarantee this either. As to the problems, I would like to provide the following suggestions. 1. BSOD issue ----------------------- BSOD issues usually relate to hardware or driver problems. If you have WDP enabled, you may need to check the hard drive with chkdsk /f command as WDP is very sensitive to the hard drive problem. In addition, dump files (located in the C:\windows\minidump folder) include information about computer or application crashes. You can analyze them by yourself or send them to me for analyzing. 2. System Mechanic & system locks out ----------------------- I am not sure how System Mechanic works and whether it conflicts with SteadyState. You may need to contact System Mechanic support to confirm this. As to SteadyState restrictions, would you please explain what problem was encountered and which restriction caused this? We can discuss it together. 3. Update/uninstall security programs ----------------------- Retain Changes Temporarily will remove all the changes when the deadline comes. Thus, it cannot be used to update the system. Schedule Software Updates is recommended to do so. Regarding to deletion of the security programs. You can refer to its software manual. As I know, further actions are usually required when uninstalling some security programs. Thank you for your continuous support on Microsoft products. If anyone else need SCT, please send email to me at: v-shshao@microsoft.com, I will reply with a copy of Shared Computer Toolkit. Best Regards,

Shawn: Do you still have the English version of SCT 1.1? If so, may I have a copy of the msi for installing it? Thank you. I am unable to use SteadyState inside of my company because of restrictions on the program versions in my IT department and need a copy of SCT 1.1. Thanks.
