Preparing to configure Windows... for 13 hours now

I reinstalled Windows 7 for reasons that could be explained in an entirely  separate thread.

Anyway, Windows 7 is stuck on the "stage 3 of 3 Preparing to configure Windows" screen and has been since late last afternoon. So for a good 13 hours.

I'm not supposed to turn the computer off...

So do I wait until the world comes to an end or do I have other options?

Yes, this is happening after running MS Update after the reinstall.

We really don't have this kind of time to waste.

was the installation ok?

It may happen because of some AntiVirus tools.

Yes,

I had rebooted a couple times after joining client to domain, etc, so it only stalled after the update process.

After 30 minutes of waiting and some googling, I just pressed Crtl+Alt+Del and Windows kindly asked me to login.

Ctrl Alt Del worked for me too.

Windows then asked me to logon and then *again* to press Ctr Alt Del and logon again!

I let the updates run overnight.  The laptop went into sleep mode.  I think it has something to do with that.

I should have googled this before.

Would have saved me a couple of hours on other machines I was installing yesterday (I just powered the machine down after a couple of hours, after which it came up working too).

This was a GREAT tip. I only waited about 15 minutes before using Google to find this answer. Once I pressed Crtl+Alt+Del to log in, there was an additional update to be done. It proceeded as it should have, and all is well. Thank you for saving me alot of time and frustration.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete worked like a charm. It worked right away and went to the login screen. Thank you so much! :)
