PowerPoint errors when accessing file from MOSS
Attempting to open any PowerPoint file from SharePoint MOSS using a Vista or Windows XP Desktop running Office 2007 message: "PowerPoint has encountered an error and needs to close." This does not happen when opening the same file(s) from a Windows 2003 Server desktop running Office 2007.

Hi, As this issue is a command issue, please provide more information and check as following: For Windows XP Desktop 1. Open the PowerPoint file from moss directly From your post, you got the error “PowerPoint has encountered an error and needs to close”. Is the file opened by Office PowerPoint client or browser? 2. Download the same file from moss, and open the file from local, what’s the result? For Windows 2003 Server desktop, please use the same account to check and test above steps. If you would get the error when you opened the PowerPoint file in local, please check your office PowerPoint Application in local. If you got the error only for Windows 2003 Server desktop while Opening the PowerPoint file from moss directly, please check whether there is any useful error message in event viewer and ULS logs in Moss Server. Hope this helps Thanks! Stanfford

Problem exists using Windows XP when opening from MOSS but not directly from the file system. Moved the user to Windows 7 to solve the problem.

After, clean install of Windows 7 on the same machine, the same errors have resurfaced. This client experiences PowerPoint crashes and failures when selecting Edit in PowerPoint from the SharePoint library for both pptx and ppt files. the same files can be opened and edited from a fileshare. Other desktop clients in the same environment are able to open and edit the same PowerPoint files from the SharePoint librry. This is not a random error but rather is consistent. Also, for a time after the new OS install the errors did not occur; then they began to occur again. The log files on the client say only that PowerPoint crashed or PowerPoint failed. There are no associated log file incidents on the server.
